In addition to the supplements listed, the following is also recommended: Pulse Oximeter - A pulse oximeter is a small device that clips onto your finger and measures the oxygen in your blood. After placing the clip on your finger, you get a heart rate reading and blood oxygen level reading. A normal blood oxygen level measured by a pulse oximeter is around 97% unless there are underlying health problems. Blood oxygen should never drop below 90% because this will affect the amount of oxygen received by the brain and other vital organs. Should blood oxygen drop below 90% and doesn't quickly resolve, you should go to the emergency room. Low levels of blood oxygen can result in symptoms of confusion and lethargy; while levels below 80% are dangerous and increase the risk of organ damage. Many doctors in emergency rooms are noticing a very concerning finding: Some COVID-19 patients have dangerously low levels of oxygen, but appear completely comfortable. This is being called “silent hypoxia.” While other conditions can cause silent hypoxia, the number of people with COVID-19 presenting this way is making some doctors rethink how COVID-19 is managed before they need emergency care. I Pulse Oximeter (usage instructions) In symptomatic patients, monitoring with home pulse oximetry is recommended (due to asymptomatic hypoxia). The limitations of home pulse oximeters should be recognized, and validated devices are preferred. Multiple readings should be taken over the course of the day, and a downward trend should be regarded as ominous. Baseline or ambulatory desaturation < 94% should prompt hospital admission. The following guidance is suggested: - Use the index or middle finger; avoid the toes or ear lobe. – Only accept values associated with a strong pulse signal. – Observe readings for 30–60 seconds to identify the most common value. – Remove nail polish from the finger on which measurements are made. – Warm cold extremities prior to measurement Incentive Spirometer - Keeps alveoli in the lungs inflated & healthy, encourages deep breathing to break up & expel mucus, forces the lungs to move more than normal and helps shake excess mucus loose making it easier to get rid of. The incentive spirometer cann also reduce risk of lung infections by increasing the ability to expel mucus. In turn, this helps reduce infection-causing organisms in the lungs.
