These are a couple of my favorite products you can use to support the health of your mouth and stomach lining during chemotherapy. Chemo drugs target cells that divide rapidly, and the mucus membranes of the mouth and digestive tract are lined with cells that are replaced every few days. For this reason, they are particularly prone to damage. Also, it is important to remember that the digestive tract is basically one long tube that starts in your mouth and goes all the way through your intestines--so you may find that if you are having symptoms in your mouth you may also have heartburn, nausea, constipation, or diarrhea. These products help to decrease pain and irritation from mouth sores and heartburn while you are going through chemo. Good luck! *this information is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for advice from your oncology team. Please check with your team before making any medical decisions.

Protocol for Surgical Recovery When you are recovering from surgery your body needs to put all its resources towards healing, so rest is imperative! Also, your body needs to move to regain and retain mobility, so movement is also essential. General recommendations: Sleep as much as you want! 10-12 hours/day for the first few days is fine. Take naps if you need. Stay hydrated--this helps your body clear out medications from surgery, decreases discomfort, and helps to move the bowels. If you are having trouble with bowel movements, increase water intake, drink prune juice, or take miralax or a magnesium supplement For lumpectomy, you can start exercises for upper body mobility starting the day after surgery. For mastectomy, start these exercises after 1 week. For either surgery, get up and move around to your comfort level as soon as possible. To reduce scarring, you can use silicone based scar strips as soon as the wound has closed and dressings have been removed. This decreases sensitivity and helps with healing. After 2 weeks, you can switch to a silicone based scar gel. Preparing for surgery: The general recommendation is no food starting midnight the night before surgery, and clear liquids only up to 4 hours before surgery. One option that is becoming more common is to drink 32 ounces of apple juice 4 hours before surgery. This keeps the blood sugar more stable during a long surgery, and helps you feel better after the surgery. Supplement Recommendations Starting 2 weeks before surgery: Dose Notes Whole foods multi (innate response): 1 Per day Aller-C (Vital Nutrients): 2 twice per day Until bottle runs out (vitamin C and quercetin -antiinflammatory, for skin repair) Biotic Extra: 3 per day Vitamin A, Zinc, immune supportive herbs for tissue repair and resilience Starting right after surgery Fish oil caps: 2 per day Starting two weeks after surgery BCQ: 2 caps 3X/day For 4 weeks. (stronger antiinflammatory for wound healing)

Welcome to the Thriving Survivors Chemotherapy Support Program. I am happy to get to support you through this process! Here are the natural products I talk about in the Thriving Survivors Chemo support Program. This information is for your knowledge and education and is not a substitute for medical advice. While I have seen research that indicates these supplements are safe and effective in breast cancer survivors, this is not a guarantee that they will be effective or prevent recurrence. Give yourself the time and support you need to heal! Some suggestions for making this happen: Find an acupuncturist or craniosacral therapist (optimally who specializes in cancer treatment) for the day and week after your treatments. Make time for rest! Know who your support people are. Sometimes the most useful thing your support system can provide is day-to-day help–making a meal for you or your family, driving a carpool, doing a load of laundry, etc. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Think ahead of time about what your dietary needs may be and have some easy prep foods ready to go for the days following your treatments. Diet for Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Why? There are several reasons to eat in this way for chemotherapy treatments: When you limit your body’s caloric intake leading up to and following chemotherapy, your normal cells will slow down their metabolism--this helps to target the chemo to any cancer cells and reduce uptake by your normal cells, which hopefully minimizes side effects. This means you feel better and can get back to life faster! Chemotherapy is hard on your mouth and digestive tract. This diet helps to minimize reflux, nausea, and mouth sores. This diet helps to manage the blood sugar changes that result from the steroids used during treatment. General Recommendations: 36 hours before treatment: Start eating light, frequent meals. Depending on your level of activity, eat 500-1000 calories this day. Day of treatment: Eat 600-800 calories this day in light, frequent meals. Do make sure that you eat though! Hydrate! 3+ liters of water, broth, low sugar electrolyte drink (such as vitalite), or herbal tea. Many forms of chemotherapy cause mouth sores and it is necessary to keep ice in your mouth during this part of the infusion. It is helpful to make a frozen smoothie to eat during this time (recipe below) to keep blood sugar up, as well as keep mouth, throat, and esophagus cold. Day after treatment : 500-1000 calories depending on level of activity Days 2-5 after treatment : slowly work your way back to normal food depending on mouth and digestion.
