"By aiding slower absorption of food, resulting in moderated glucose levels and managed hunger, fiber has been linked to 5-6 lb weight loss when 10.5 gms/per day ingested. Metamucil 6 gm. Q am 4 gms Q p.m. can be the easiest but many prefer to use a high fiber bread in the morning (read the label…slices of Dave’s bread are 3 gm fiber per slice with other specially formulated breads having as much as 8 gm/slice!) Chia or Flax seeds are an increasingly popular way to get in one’s daily fiber via chia pudding or sprinkled seeds on toast or fruit and yogurt can also do the trick. "

"Berberine is a supplement made from plant extracts that seems to have multiple health benefits, especially on metabolism and cardiovascular risks. Small scale studies support its use in controlling one’s appetite and specifically inhibiting an enzyme leading to central fat storage. These studies have shown modest weight loss (5 + lbs in 12 weeks) and reduction in waist circumference with daily use of berberine supplements. Berberine has been shown to reduce average blood sugar levels and HgA1C (the lab value that measures average blood sugar), lower triglycerides and lipid levels and positively affect metabolic syndrome. How to take berberine: The best evidence suggests to take a berberine 500 mg tablet/ three times per day (total 1.5 gm/day). Take it 30 minutes before each meal. It has been used safely for up to 6 months. Chronic use is not usually recommended as it is a potent antimicrobial and affects the gut microbiome. (It can cause digestive issues as a side effect.) Early studies show amazing effects on cardiovascular risk factors overall but the studies are very small and more information is needed. It does appear to be safe, however: Cautions: - Berberine can interact with blood thinning medications and increase your risk of bruising or bleeding. If you are taking blood thinners such as coumadin, plavix. Eliquis, Pradaxa or Xeralto you may wish to consider alternatives to berberine in your metabolic care plan. - Berberine can interact with many drugs: Cozaar, metformin, tacrolimus, pentobarbital, Versed, Robitussin DM, sedatives, and other medications. These interactions may require more clinical monitoring or dose adjustments and should be discussed with your pharmacist and clinician. - If you have diabetes, berberine can lower your blood sugars and decrease your insulin needs, so monitoring your blood sugar closely is advised, and adjustments can be made under the advice of your diabetes physician. - Berberine can lower blood pressure, so taking it with medications that lower blood pressure might cause your blood pressure to go too low. Your blood pressure should be monitored closely. Be mindful not to confuse with Berberine Complex, which has a different use. "

Additional notes
"Limited (and dated) research indicates 5-HTP promotes decreased food intake and weight loss as well as typical anorexia-related symptoms without changes in mood state during the period of observation, with a consistent presence of early satiety and a consequent reduction in carbohydrate intake. Moreover, treatment with 5-HTP prompted a decrease in BMI due to an increased feeling of satiety. "
