  • Vitamin D

Vitamin D aids in bone health, mood, and reducing autoimmunity. Vitamin D levels in bloodwork have an updated ideal reference range of 50-90. Many labs have not adjusted their reference range bar yet. Too little Vitamin D is detrimental, but too much Vitamin D is toxic; it's one of the 4 fat-soluble vitamins, so it builds up in the body. It's important to figure out your body's ideal supplementation set point. Many people only take Vitamin D in the late fall and winter months since summer sunshine stores from August can last until October before dropping off. It's important to get Vitamin D tested routinely if you are supplementing. To oversimplify: 1/3 of people probably have adequate Vitamin D stores from just sunshine, and they only find they need to supplement 2,000 IU or 5,000 IU daily in the cold months if they are not taking sunny vacations. 1/3 of people find they are moderately low (30-50) year-round and they take 5,000 IU daily and it keeps their levels between 50-90 year round. 1/3 of people discover after their first Vitamin D labs that they are extremely deficient, with levels less than 30. They typically are recommended to take 10,000 IU for 2 months to bring levels up, and then retest. If levels have corrected, then they typically switch to 5,000 IU daily. Everyone is encouraged to test levels every 3-6 months until they figure out their body's setpoint. A handful of people will have genetic variations: their Vitamin D will shoot through the roof even with low supplementation, or their Vitamin D stubbornly stays low and requires 10,000 IU daily longterm supplementation. Vitamin D is taken anytime of day but best absorbed with a fatty meal. I like the metagenics softgels because they have a small amount of healthy oil in them to improve absorption. If someone is not already taking a multivitamin, then I typically recommend the ADKEvail combo because pairing Vitamin D with the other 3 fat soluble vitamins is synergistic in the body and improves absorption. • Sensitive Daily Multivitamin

    Sensitive Daily Multivitamin product 1
    Sensitive Daily Multivitamin product 2

Most high quality multivitamins contain methyl-B12 and methyl-folate. They also contain many minerals like iodine, and moderate levels of B6. While these benefit most people, they can be stimulating to sensitive systems. The Multivitamin One Sensitive does not contain B12 or folate or the stimulating category of minerals, and it has lower levels of B6. I add back in the important missing B12 and folate by pairing half of a sensitive-friendly lozenge with the multivitamin capsule. Many people who are sensitive to these nutrients have genetically slowed MTHFR and COMT enzymes. Although the target dose is 1 full capsule multivitamin + 1/2 lozenge, it's recommended to start with a sprinkle of each. I recommend buying 00 empty vegetarian (don't dissolve in your hands like gelatin) capsules and opening the capsule and pouring an amount into the empty capsule, and slowly increasing this over weeks. I recommend buying a pill cutter that can cut small pills and starting with 1/8 or 1/16 of the lozenge dissolved in the mouth. The Seeking Health multivitamin has the activated, absorbable forms of vitamins and it includes extra anti-inflammatory compounds. If your system is sensitive, see the Sensitive Daily Multivitamin protocol for a multivitamin instead. Multivitamins are typically taken with food to prevent nausea, and in the morning or at lunch because for some people they disrupt sleep. BrocColinate paired with an activating enzyme delivers sulfurophane, one of the most effective anti-inflammatory, glutathione-boosting compounds. Glutathione protects the brain, protects cells from inflammation, and also helps the liver with detox. Most people are deficient in magnesium. I typically recommend people pick one magnesium product. Magnesium glycinate is calming (not sedating, but can sometimes boost sleep if taken at night although it can be taken anytime); this is one of the only types of magnesium that does not act as a natural laxative. Many people benefit from a gentle natural stool softening effect; Trimagnesium has the natural stool softening citrate type combined with the glycinate relaxing type and the muscle-energy supportive malate type. It can be taken anytime of day. If Vitamin D blood lab levels are below 50-90, research now shows a lot of benefit with supplementing extra Vitamin D; it aids in bone health, mood, and reducing autoimmunity. See the Vitamin D Protocol for Vitamin D supplement recommendations. When total testosterone levels drop below 600-700, or when free testosterone drops low, it's common to see negative effects on mood, energy, sleep, exercise stamina, and sexual function. Healthy testosterone levels help protect the brain, the heart, and blood vessel health. I've seen TestoJack 200 (not 100 or 300) help with hormone optimization and boost testosterone levels by a couple hundred points after a couple months of daily use. TestoJack is meant to be taken in the morning so it doesn't disrupt sleep. I typically recommend introducing supplements one a time, 3+ days apart. If the target dose is multiple capsules, then many people prefer to start with a single capsule and slowly work their way up to the target dose over the course of 1-2 weeks. *Medical Disclaimer: While Dr. Rachel Yeager, ND, is a licensed naturopathic doctor, public protocols and health consults are educational only.
