Lifestyle recommendations
Nutrition
Soluble fiber:
Include foods rich in soluble fiber, such as oats, barley, beans, lentils, apples, berries, and vegetables. Soluble fiber slows digestion, nourishes beneficial gut bacteria, and supports the production of short-chain fatty acids—all of which may promote healthy GLP-1 activity. Increase fiber gradually and drink adequate water to minimize digestive discomfort.
Protein:
Include an appropriate source of protein with each meal. Protein-rich meals may stimulate a greater GLP-1 response and promote fullness more effectively than meals composed primarily of carbohydrates or fat. Examples include eggs, poultry, fish, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tofu, tempeh, beans, and lentils.
Omega-3 fatty acids:
Regularly consume foods containing the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, such as salmon, sardines, trout, tuna, and other fatty fish. These fatty acids may support glucose regulation and influence GLP-1 release through receptors in the intestinal tract. Choose lower-mercury seafood options when appropriate.
Bitter foods and herbs:
Consider adding naturally bitter foods and herbs to meals, including arugula, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, ginger, and citrus peel or zest. Bitter compounds may influence digestive signaling, gut motility, the gut microbiome, and pathways involved in GLP-1 secretion.
Movement
Aim for regular, moderate-intensity movement, such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or strength training. Consistent physical activity can support insulin sensitivity, glucose regulation, and the body’s natural GLP-1 response. Choose activities appropriate for your current health and fitness level.
Sleep
Maintain a consistent sleep and wake schedule whenever possible. Keep your bedroom dark, cool, and quiet to support melatonin production and restful sleep. Exposure to natural light shortly after waking can also help regulate your circadian rhythm, which may support healthy metabolic and hormonal function.
Stress Management
Incorporate stress-reduction practices into your daily routine. Options include walking, stretching, deep breathing, meditation, guided imagery, time in nature, and laughter. Because ongoing stress can affect metabolic health and GLP-1 signaling, even brief periods of relaxation may be beneficial.
