Flaxseeds are small, brown or golden-colored seeds that are the richest plant source of a plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, called alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

The health-promoting components in flaxseed are associated with improved cardiovascular health. In 2014, Health Canada approved a health claim that linked eating ground whole flaxseed to healthy blood cholesterol, a major factor for heart health. The daily amount shown to support healthy cholesterol is 40 g (5 tablespoons) of ground whole flaxseed to be consumed over three eating occasions in the day.

The average North American consumes 10-20 g of fiber per day, which is about half the recommended amount. The recommendation is based on a correlation between high dietary fiber intake and improved health. There are two types of fibers: water-soluble and water-insoluble.
