Although iodine is found in many tissues, 80% of the total body reserve is associated with the synthesis of the thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine and thyroxine. Under the direction of the hypothalamus via thyrotropin produced by the anterior pituitary, the rate of thyroxine secretion into body fluids is controlled. The rate of secretion determines the rate of the oxidative processes taking place in the tissues of many organs involved in energy metabolism, protein synthesis, growth, blood flow, respirations, heart rate, gastric motility, digestive fluid secretion and cholesterol secretion from the liver.
