Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) and Folate Panel, Serum - Folic acid deficiency is common in pregnant women, alcoholics, patients with diets that do not include raw fruits and vegetables, and people with structural damage to the small intestine. The most reliable and direct method of diagnosing folate deficiency is the determination of folate levels in both erythrocytes and serum. Low folic acid levels, however, can also be the result of a primary Vitamin B12 deficiency that decreases the ability of cells to take up folic acid. B12 is decreased in pernicious anemia, total or partial gastrectomy, malabsorption and certain congenital biochemical disorders.

An elevated concentration of homocysteine is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. When used in conjunction with methylmalonic acid (MMA), these tests are useful to diagnose and monitor vitamin B12 (cobalamin) and folic acid deficiency and are often useful in evaluating macrocytosis (an elevated MCV, an erythrocytic index).

The biological foundations of mental well-being are complex and deeply interconnected with systemic physiology. While clinical interviews and subjective symptom scales are essential diagnostic tools, objective laboratory testing provides critical insights into the underlying biochemical drivers of psychiatric symptoms. By identifying specific physiological imbalances, clinicians can move beyond generalized symptom management to design highly targeted, personalized therapeutic interventions. By utilizing targeted functional and diagnostic testing, clinicians can uncover the root physiological contributors to mental health challenges, leading to safer, more effective, and highly individualized treatment protocols.
