Gut Health
GI-MAP + Zonulin
Research overwhelmingly indicates that gut health impacts overall health. The gut microbiome plays a critical role in mediating the effects of diet, digestion, immunity, metabolic function, and more. The GI-MAP (Microbial Assay Plus) test is truly unique in the field – relying exclusively on quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technology to detect parasites, bacteria, fungi, and more by targeting the specific DNA of the organisms tested. The quantitative insights provided in this process, known for accuracy and reliability, allow practitioners to create more personalized treatment protocols for optimizing gut function and addressing dysfunction. This test includes a measurement of zonulin, a protein that modulates the permeability of tight junctions between cells of the wall of the digestive tract. It is used to help diagnose intestinal permeability/leaky gut.
This test measures IgG, IgM, and IgA antibodies against endotoxins, structural and tight junction proteins. It detects disturbance in gut flora and endotoxemia, breakdown in tight junctions (occludin, zonulin), and cytoskeletal proteins. Some or all of these contribute to leaky gut to large molecules that challenge the immune system. Leaky gut to large molecules is the gateway to autoimmunity and neuroautoimmunity via blood-brain barriers damaged by endotoxins and other factors.
The Gut Barrier Panel measures IgG 1-4/C3d and IgA 1-2 for important gatekeeper markers. It helps practitioners differentiate the levels of gut dysfunction, from simple sensitivity to inflammation to more extreme levels of leaky gut.

When it comes to gastrointestinal symptoms, studies have shown that a large percentage of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is actually Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). SIBO is a common clinical condition characterized by excessive bacterial development in the small intestine. This non-invasive breath test captures exhaled hydrogen and methane, to provide practitioners with the insight to better differentiate and diagnose SIBO.
With over 200 million estimated cases of gastrointestinal disease each year in the United States, identifying the pathogenic causes is an important step in diagnosing and treating the associated symptoms, such as acute and chronic diarrhea. This panel identifies bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens present in the GI tract – the most common cause for a significant portion of cases. Furthermore, the Pathogens Panel measures viral causes of gastroenteritis unavailable by common stool tests and reveals parasites such as Cryptosporridium, Giardia, and Entamoeba histolytica.

Dr. Claude Fortin MD
Claude Fortin MD, FAARFM, ABAARM, DipABLM, FSSRP is the Medical Director of Colorado Ageless Institute PLLC. He relocated to Castle Rock, Colorado, in 2016 in association with Neurology of the Rockies LLC. For 30 years prior, he had been in private practice in Springfield, Illinois, and Associate Professor of Neurology at SIU Medical School.
At Colorado Ageless Institute, Dr. Fortin has developed a world-class, evidence-based regenerative cellular medicine practice. He approaches disease in a radically different framework: disease reversal and prevention from the cellular level. He uses advanced diagnostic tests, cutting-edge cellular medicine therapeutics, including peptides that are years ahead of the standard medical practice. Dr. Fortin utilizes scientifically documented age reversal medicine techniques, including brain preservation & longevity programs, to address the underlying genetic, cellular, biochemical, and physiological processes that result in what we all recognize as aging.
Dr. Fortin has incorporated the diverse medical training he has acquired over the years to include principles of lifestyle, functional, cellular, regenerative, and age reversal medicine into his approach with patients at Colorado Ageless Institute.
He is board-certified in Neurology, Clinical EEG, Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine, and Lifestyle Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine, with added Certification in peptide therapy. He is a fellow of the Peptide and Cellular Medicine Master Mind Program at the Seeds Scientific Research & Performance Institute and obtained Certification in Age Management from the Cenegenics Institute. He is a member of the Seeds Mastermind program, the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and the American Academy of Psychiatry and Neurology.
