Digestion and Gut Health

  • GI Effects® Comprehensive Profile - 1 day

The link between human health and the gut microbiome has been thoroughly researched and well-established over the years. An imbalance in this symbiotic relationship can often be the root cause of many common gastrointestinal complaints. This GI Effects panel provides practitioners with a comprehensive assessment of gut health through a combination of PCR, culture, and microscopic testing methods – ensuring any and all relevant organisms are identified. Our data-driven approach provides analysis based on hundreds of thousands of complete stool samples. Utilizing the latest technology and biomarkers, this profile can deliver valuable insight into digestive function, intestinal inflammation, and the intestinal microbiome.

  • Comprehensive Stool Analysis (CSA)

Gastrointestinal complaints are among the most common in medical care. The CSA profile helps pinpoint the causes of gastrointestinal symptoms and chronic systemic conditions, and measures key markers of digestion, absorption and inflammation. It contains comprehensive bacteriology and yeast cultures to identify the presence of beneficial flora, imbalanced flora including Clostridium species, and dysbiotic flora, as well as the detection of infectious pathogens by PCR and other gold standard methods. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing to prescriptive and natural agents is also performed for appropriate cultured bacterial and fungal species at no additional charge.

  • Yeast Culture & Sensitivities

This lab identifies levels of specific yeast species in a patient’s stool. It serves as an important diagnostic tool in therapeutic planning for patients with chronic gastrointestinal and extra-gastrointestinal symptoms. For appropriate fungal species, the lab also performs antimicrobial susceptibility testing to prescriptive and natural agents at no additional charge. This provides useful clinical information to help plan an appropriate treatment protocol.

  • Intestinal Permeability Assessment

The Intestinal Permeability Assessment directly measures the ability of two non-metabolized sugar molecules to permeate the intestinal mucosa. It assesses small intestinal absorption and barrier function in the bowel to help diagnose malabsorption and intestinal permeability/leaky gut.

  • Calprotectin

Calprotectin is a reliable noninvasive marker for differentiating gastrointestinal inflammation associated with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) from inflammation that may be associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Such differentiation is very important because IBD can be life-threatening. Monitoring the levels of fecal calprotectin can play an essential role in determining the effectiveness of clinical interventions, and is a good predictor of IBD remission and relapse. Calprotectin provides clinicians with a valuable tool, not only for differentiating IBD from IBS, but also allowing them to monitor and predict treatment outcomes and enabling better management of IBD flare-ups.
