Telomere Length Test
Cell Science Systems
Sample type: Whole blood
Requires fasting: No
Phlebotomy is required for this test
Details
The Telomere Length Test measures the average length of a patient's telomeres using PCR in white blood cells. Analyzing telomere length may be the key to understanding and preventing a variety of conditions, including cardiovascular disease, inflammatory disorders, and neurological conditions.
- Average Telomere Length
Estimated days for results: Results should arrive 10 business days after the lab receives samples.
Current research shows that telomere shortening contributes to cellular aging and susceptibility to metabolic disorders and chronic disease. Telomeres are segments of DNA found at the ends of chromosomes. They can be prematurely shortened when exposed to environmental chemicals, oxidation, inflammation, and stress. This leads to DNA damage and contributes to early cell death.
