The cortisol awakening response is a distinct part of the circadian cortisol rhythm that measures HPA axis reactivity. Cortisol levels rise to their highest level around 30 minutes after waking and decline throughout the day. This test uses saliva to measure levels 5 times throughout the day and provide practitioners with a graphic view of that cortisol awakening response curve.

- Collect your sample on a day in which you did not have significant sleep disturbances.
- If you are taking glucocorticoids, check with your healthcare provider regarding when you should collect your samples.
24 Hours Before Collection
- DO NOT drink alcohol.
Day of Collection
- DO NOT drink more than 8 oz of caffeine.
- DO NOT use hydrocortisone (cortisol) cream.
- WAIT to brush and floss your teeth until
- Morning: After collection 3
- Evening: After collection 5
- WAIT to eat until:
- Morning: After collection 3
- Evening: After collection 4
Collection Timing
- Upon waking collect saliva immediately, within 5 minutes.
- 30 minutes after waking, collect second sample.
- 60 minutes after waking, collect third sample.
- Before your evening meal or approximately 4 - 5 PM collect 4th sample.
- At bedtime, but no later than midnight, collect 5th sample.
- (Optional) Extra Cortisol Collection: If you struggle with insomnia, collect during the night, otherwise at noon.
