The Intestinal Permeability Assessment directly measures the ability of two non-metabolized sugar molecules to permeate the intestinal mucosa. It assesses small intestinal absorption and barrier function in the bowel to help diagnose malabsorption and intestinal permeability/leaky gut.

Before You Start
- Please read the test collection instructions carefully.
- This test uses lactulose and mannitol. It is not recommended if you are on a galactose/lactose-restricted diet or have had allergic reactions to lactulose or sugar alcohols (such as mannitol, sorbitol, or xylitol).
- Use caution if you are diabetic, as lactulose can affect blood sugar levels.
- If you have glucosuria, uncontrolled diabetes, or take medications that increase urinary glucose (e.g., Invokana), consult your doctor before completing this test.
3 Days Before Collection
- Avoid the following medications. DO NOT discontinue any prescription medications without first consulting your healthcare provider.
- Aspirin and other NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen)
- Laxatives
- Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium hydroxide (e.g., Maalox, Equate, Milk of Magnesia, Rolaids, Mylanta)
- Medications that contain sorbitol and/or mannitol
Night Before Collection
- Do not eat or drink anything for at least 8 hours before beginning the test.
- Discontinue non-essential supplements and medications until after the test is completed. DO NOT discontinue any prescription medications without first consulting your healthcare provider.
- Freeze the gel freezer pack for at least 4 hours before shipping.
Day of Collection
- Do not eat or drink for 2 hours after consuming the Lactulose/Mannitol drink mix.
- After the first 2 hours, you may eat and drink but must avoid any foods or beverages that contain fructose, lactose, mannitol, or other sugar alcohols.
- Fruits and fruit juices
- Jams, jellies, honey
- Soft drinks and sweeteners with high-fructose corn syrup or agave syrup
- All dairy products
- Mushrooms, beans, and legumes (including peanuts)
- Vegetables
- Chewing gum
- Reduced-calorie sweeteners, candy, and cough drops
