This is a set of four tests that check your body's electrolyte levels, acid-base balance, and water balance. It's often used in hospitals and emergency rooms to help diagnose various conditions and to monitor how certain treatments are affecting your electrolyte balance.
- Sodium: Checks if you have the right amount of water in your body and maintains proper pressure to prevent leaks from cells and organs. It's crucial for diagnosing and treating electrolyte imbalances.
- Potassium: Essential for muscle and nerve function and helps maintain fluid balance. It's used to diagnose and treat conditions with abnormal potassium levels.
- Chloride: Helps keep your body's fluid volume, acidity, and electrical neutrality. It's important for diagnosing and treating metabolic disorders and conditions like cystic fibrosis and diabetic acidosis.
- Carbon Dioxide (Bicarbonate): Assesses your body's acid-base balance. It's evaluated with other electrolytes to diagnose and treat disorders affecting your body's acid-base balance.
