Epstein-Barr Virus Nuclear Antigen (EBNA) Antibody (IgG) - This test checks for antibodies against the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is known for causing infectious mononucleosis, often referred to as mono. This condition is common in children and young adults and usually resolves on its own. However, EBV can also lead to more serious conditions, including certain types of tumors. The presence of EBNA IgG antibodies, which typically appear a few months after the initial symptoms and remain for life, can indicate past infection and recovery. A positive result for another antibody, VCA-IgM, without EBNA IgG, points to a recent, active infection.

This test is suitable for individuals suspected of having a current or past infection with EBV, especially if they have experienced symptoms of mono or are being evaluated for related lymphoproliferative disorders.
