Epstein-Barr Virus Viral Capsid Antigen (VCA) Antibody (IgM) - This test is used to detect a primary infection of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is the common cause of infectious mononucleosis. EBV infections are usually not serious in children and young adults but can lead to lymphoproliferative disorders, including tumors. The VCA-IgM is an antibody that becomes detectable when the infection starts, and its levels drop to undetectable after recovery, usually within a month for young children and within three months for others.
