Statin User's Supplement Plan

The following supplement plan is designed for people who take statin medications. This supplement plan is meant to be used in combination with the advice of your physician. Do not stop taking prescription medication without consulting your physician.

Nutrient Depletions & Interactions For Statin Users:

Coenzyme Q10: This semi-essential vitamin is depleted by statin medications. This deficiency is typically the cause ofthe statin-related muscle pain. Supplementation with CoQ10 at a dose of between 30 and 200 mg daily has been shown to have beneficial effects on statin muscle pain. [PMID: 24170646]
Vitamin D: This vitamin should generally be supplemented at a dose of 1000-5000IU per day depending on need. [PMID: 34421316]
Interactions with Garlic and St. John's Wort: Supplements of garlic (allicin) and St. John’s wort may impact the cytochrome P450 metabolism of some statins and alter their effectiveness.
CAUTION: RED YEAST RICE MAY CONTAIN LOVASTATIN AND SHOULD NOT BE USED EXCEPT ON THE ADVICE OF YOUR PHYSICIAN. Interestingly, the Food and Drug Administration does not allow the presence of lovastatin in Red Yeast Rice supplements sold in the US.

Supplements:

O.N.E. Multivitamin: This is formulated with 50 mg Coenzyme Q10 and 2000 mg Vitamin D. Depending on your needs, this single supplement may be adequate to meet your needs.
Vitamin D: Adjust your dose based on your blood level. Many clinicians recommend an optimal Vitamin D level of 50-80 ng/ml. Vitamin D Labs (affiliate link) can be done by your physician or ordered in the NutriScape Lab Shop.
Coenzyme Q10: Depletion of CoQ10 is responsible for muscle soreness in people who take statins. Adjust your dose as needed for muscle pain.
