Fasting & Detox Protocol #1

6 more items in Fasting & Detox Protocol #1Detox & Fasting Fasting provides rest and rejuvenation for every level of the body, mind, and spirit. It builds the body’s vital force, our curative power, which releases accumulated toxins, clears dead cells, stimulates building of new cells, and re-balances and rejuvenates the body. As toxins are flushed from the brain cells, concentration improves, creative thinking expands, depressions lifts, insomnia stops, anxieties fade, and peace and tranquility abound. Fasting has been known to alleviate and cure many diseases. It is a technology that can be utilized to rebuild the body. It is the best form of anti-aging and is attributed to the healing of many conditions. Hippocrates said, “Everyone has a doctor in him, we just need to help him in his work.” Regular cleansing helps awaken your inner doctor. This is the basis of Naturopathic Medicine. We must understand and cooperate with the healing power of nature. It is our divine birthright as a human being. We need only release limited, outdated, and fragmented parts of ourselves that no longer serve the ultimate goal of human existence. Intermittent Fasting & Fasting Fasting is going without solid food for some defined period of time which is generally 1 or more days at a time. Intermittent fasting is not taking food for a certain number of hours each day. Intermittent fasting is a powerful approach to eating that has become popular because it can help you lose weight without feeling hunger. It can also help reduce your risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. If done correctly, intermittent fasting can also lead to better immunity, better sleep and better energy. It’s a natural way of eating and the body responds very well most of the time. It’s different from traditional fasting because you are taking in solid food, but you are spending some portion of the day “fasting” so you give the GI system a break and this activates the rejuvenation systems of the body. Benefits : Breaking the three meals a day myth in favor of fasting, regular detoxification and cleansing will do wonders for your health. This type of intermittent (scheduled) eating was practiced by our ancestors. It is only in the last 200 years that three meals a day mental setup has gradually became the norm. Previously, it was a sign of wealth to eat frequently and was reserved for festivities. They simply did not have the frequent and simple access to food that we have now. Food is the Mood Your thought patterns and mood are created by the food you eat. What is every living being’s basic need? It is always FOOD. We bond over food, express our love through it, celebrate with it. It is even part of our mourning rituals, mid-morning rituals, lunch, dinner, dessert, late night snacks on and on and on. Pop quiz…Do you know where the majority of neurotransmitters and mood regulating chemicals are made? In the GUT. The majority of serotonin is secreted in the gut and then affects mood. Our food is a basic survival need. Food is not the problem, but our ‘need’ of it is. Over time, for a majority of the well fed population, this ‘need’ has been translated to ‘want’ . So, we fill ourselves with a ton of varieties and unbelievable portions of food, and yet do not feel fulfilled by the experience or complete with it. Filling our bellies is not equal to a fulfilled life or lifestyle yet they are often mistaken. It’s OK to eat and to have the luxuries, but let’s also develop a body and mind that is ready to enjoy them. Real freedom is having control of the body and it’s sensations. Long Term Goals (1) Listening to the Innate wisdom of the body– Eating when hungry trains you to listen to yourself. Eat when your body says to eat, not when anything in an external world tells you to. (2) Re-activating the body memory to derive energy from life – When we eat only when we really need to, our body starts to activate the bio-memory of creating life from life! We all have it in us- the ability to develop energy from the sun and air and convert it to life force. It’s there, let’s re-activate it. (3) Stepping away from food patterns. – When you re-wire the food patterns to eat when you need to, you begin to break the food patterns that have unconsciously ran your life. It’s truly freedom. (4) Total Revitalization – Restores your Divine connection to the Elements of the Cosmos and increases one’s sense of grace, joy, and bliss. Clearing the Field & Setting Intention It is important to release things that are not serving you anymore. Think of some quality, symptoms, or pattern that you can release. Think of a new quality that you would like to establish in your system. “I release all limiting beliefs from my heart, my mind, my sub-concious mind, and cellular memory that no longer serve me. I am worthy of supreme health. I love my life. I deserve to be healthy, happy, prosperous, and free. I am perfectly in tune with the Oneness in the Universe. I am in perfect alignment with my sacred reality right now. And so it is.” I am releasing _____________________ I am creating _____________________ Schedule Day 1 -3: Water & Herbal Teas & Green Juices/Red Juices Day 4-5: Breaking the Fast — Broth, Soup & Live Foods Green Juice Guidelines Juices (16 ounces each) are taken 4-6 times a day (~ 8AM, 11AM, 2PM, 5PM) It is best to drink juices within 1 hour of preparation to derive full nutritional benefit. If this is not possible, you can make a fresh batch up in the morning/evening. No problem. Simply bless and keep refrigerated. Clients with hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) can save some of their juice to have between servings, if necessary. However, fasting on vegetable juices usually allows a hypoglycemic person to feel better and be asymptomatic. The base juice recipe is Celery, Cucumber, Kale and Parsley, with additions for variety of carrot, tomato and a variety of vegetables and greens. Condiments on the side are cayenne, salt, turmeric, and lemon and ginger juices. (Refer to Green Juice – Phase 1 diagram) *Option: You can dilute juices up to 50/50 with juice/water. Diluted juices will lessen the detoxification and the stronger juices will have increased effects of cleansing. If 100% vegetable juices are too strong for you, simply dilute them with water. High- sugar (fruit) juices are only given by specific and individualized instructions. Prescription medications and Supplements Prior to fasting, discuss any changes to medications you are taking with your physician. A general guideline includes stopping vitamin/mineral/herbal supplements that come as capsules or tablets, and continuing with homeopathic and liquid or powder supplements. You can resume your normal supplement regimen after the program. Take it Easy We encourage you to do light to moderate exercise and to get plenty of rest. Please monitor your symptoms and pay attention to what your body is telling you. For your own safety and comfort, please do not be alone in isolated areas. It is best if you can take a few days off of work or school. If possible, do so. If not, don’t let it stop you. If you are using a hot tub, sauna, or salt bath please rise slowly and be aware that the hot temperatures can cause fainting from orthostatic hypotension and a decrease in blood pressure. Medical Attention For symptoms that do not go away with the above remedies, such as umbilical pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and muscle contractions and gout pain, please contact your physician or call 911. “Fasting cures disease, dries up bodily humors, puts demons to flight, gets rid of impure thoughts, makes the mind clearer, the heart purer, the body sanctified, and raise man to the throne of God.” ~Athenaeus, Greek physician Breaking the Fast Day 4-5: B: Fruit/Broth Veggie L: Living Foods & simple salads — Greens & Live Foods — no oils/dressing — use citrus/vinegar D: Energy Veggie Broth (see recipe) — OK to add cooked veggies -Continue Green Juices 2-4x/day Breaking a fast is the MOST important part of the fast. The effects of the program can be compromised if it is not broken with discipline. The main practice to follow is: do not overeat. The second practice is: take several days to transition back to your new upgraded diet. You may decide to do this program again in the future. It’s recommend to fast/detox 2-4x/year. If you fast longer than 3 days (perhaps up to 7-10 days), then take about 2-3 days to slowly reintroduce the full diet is sufficient. You want to slowly re-introduce oils in moderation. If the fast is over ten days, then add one day for every four days of the fast for full transition. The main practice is to chew your food slowly and extremely well. Eat consciously. The reason for this is that during a fast one’s digestive system has taken a rest and it often restarts slowly. To further reactivate digestion, it is helpful to break the detox program between 7-9 am, as this is the time that the powers of digestion begin to become activated. Start with shorter fasts and get used to the process before attempting longer durations. We recommend you monitor the amount of nutrients you take in. As a general, people eat too much. After fasting, the body digests 85% of the food consumed. This is far greater than the 35% it normally absorbs. Smaller meals stimulate digestive strength more slowly and thoroughly. Although digestion may return in a day, it may take 3-4 days for the digestive fire to be fully activated. Triphala is a wonderful digestive tonifier. Over-eating in this phase may disrupt the system and cause discomfort. Eat slowly and with focus. Chew food well (50 times per bite) as chewing activates the digestive process. Practice “fire breathing” before each meal for a few days to build the digestive fire. What’s next… Day 6 and beyond : You will be transitioning to a healthy diet. That means something different for everyone. You can layer on and balance out these different phases and adjust as you choose. You should aim to have > 50% live food regardless of your diet preferences. Focus on having daily live food and you’ll always be good. The main thing? Avoid your food intolerance. If you do not know your food intolerance, you can get a test HERE . If you do the test and you do not recall. Ask your ND. It’s recommended to do a fast 2-4x/year. Whether your going vegan, vegetarian, or back to eating meats, you always want to keep a primarily plant based diet, meaning most of your meals should contain vegetables with about 50% being living foods. Think of other foods like proteins and carbohydrates as more of your side-dish. You should include fat as a consistent part of the diet also. This includes nuts/seeds/avocado/oils daily. You may add grains (except for people who have excess weight and are trying to lose weight). Healthy grains include buckwheat, amaranth, or millet. If these grains are not available, you may also try quinoa, millet, or lentils. Rotate your grains and make sure they’re organic. It’s best to stay gluten/wheat free due to excessive GMO and pesticides which can contribute to inflammation. You may add beans (soaked overnight is best for digestion). Beans are a healthy protein source but contain carbohydrates as well (especially important for excess Kapha and people trying to lose weight) Clean, Organic Grass Fed/Grass Finished Meats/Organic Eggs may be added if you choose. Organic Dairy (milks, cheeses, yogurts, etc) may be added if you choose. It is best to be mindful of not consuming too much cow dairy (even organic) as it contributes to excess inflammation (especially important in any chronic diseases). There are alternatives to cow dairy including cashew milk, almond milk, and other vegan sources (nut/seeds). It is always best to stay away from sugars, processed foods, conventional animal products, and an excess of cow dairy. Don’t follow anyone else’s rules when it comes to your diet. You have to experiment and find out what is going to be the best source of fuel for you. Listen to your body. Make conscious decisions about what is best for you. You only have to answer to you. There is no perfect diet. This will vary depending on the time of season, the time of life from person to person. If you wish to add organic, wild caught, grass fed, grass finished meats, organic cow dairy (if okay by your doctor). Goat/Sheep cheeses and milks, occasional healthy sugars – maple syrup, stevia, coconut sugar. *IMPT: Follow your primary and combination food intolerance results for best long term outcome. Creating Health This is a complete system. You can erase old cellular memory and achieve a level of health that is most aptly maintained through the diet consisting high quality proteins, high quality fats, live foods and vegetables. These are the foods that your body recognizes as real food. You can easily raise the body to a new state of health and well-being, as if your physical body is vitalized. Support and nourish your body-mind system with life-giving and life-affirming foods, conscious breath, daily meditations, and harmonious thoughts, feelings, emotions, actions, and deeds. *Energy Veggie Broth Recipe: 1/2 cup carrots 1/2 cup celery 3 cups water filtered Pinch of Transformational Salt If symptoms persist—or you repeatedly feel the need to “detox”—the next step is individualized evaluation rather than another general protocol. Who it is for This routine is intended for generally healthy adults experiencing occasional difficulty relaxing, settling down, or falling asleep. Persistent insomnia, loud snoring or gasping, restless legs, significant daytime sleepiness, or ongoing anxiety or depression should be evaluated rather than managed with supplements alone. How to use: Take one capsule with breakfast and one capsule with the evening meal. Do not take it immediately before bedtime. Still having trouble sleeping? If you have followed this routine consistently for three to four weeks and are still struggling to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake feeling restored, it may be time to look beyond the supplement list. Lifestyle Prioritize 8 hours of sleep and allow additional rest when needed. Stay well hydrated and eat regular meals WITH adequate protein and colorful whole foods. Choose gentle movement while recovering and postpone strenuous exercise until you feel well. This protocol is used for prevention, rapidly restoring health and supercharging the immune system. >>A strong, adaptable, responsive, robust immune system is KEY to staying healthy. >> At onset of symptoms (cold/flu/covid/etc), immediately minimize food intake and go into a fasting state -- Water, Tea, Broth, Green Juices. >> If you you do experience symptoms -- Achy, Sore Throat, Fatigue, etc -- Implement this strategy. >> Follow this protocol to Improve Immunity = Protect Self AND Others >> This protocol will gently assist the immune system allowing for speedy recovery, shorter duration, and less intensity of symptoms. >> Follow this protocol for short term (1-4 weeks) as needed. >> If symptoms persist more than 30 days, please contact you Naturopathic Doctor for additional guidance. Food Recommendations: Diet is the MOST important thing. Keep it clean. Avoid your Food Intolerances. Avoid Alcohol and ALL SUGAR because these things suppress the immune system and counteract all of the immune stimulating products. Keep the diet simple! The general idea when someone is sick is to ease up on the food, allowing the body to use it’s resources for healing instead of digesting and detoxifying a bunch of food. Many old time docs recommend a fasting state when ill. Keep the diet simple and liquid. A homemade vegetable or bone broth soup is great. Organic meats, veggies, little rice. No heavy/creamy soups, no pasta, no excess carbs. Vegetable soups are great and easy to digest. No heavy meals, no fried foods, no ice‐cream, chips, candy, etc. Herbal teas and tonic mushroom teas are great – hot or at room temperature. BONUS: Dealing with the Fever – First of all, fever is your friend. You WANT a fever. If fever is present, NO SOLID FOOD. If you do not run a fever when you are sick, then you are really sick! This is such an important part of clearing the body of viral particles that the old docs would “sweat it out” their patients. It is normal for people to want to use a fever reducer (Aspirin,Tylenol, etc) at the first sign of a rising temperature, but, this is the WORST possible idea. This will suppress and prolong illness. Do not confuse suppression with cure. Allow the temperature to rise to 101º F (38.3º C) or even 102º F (38.9º C). Stay hydrated, keep a cool rag nearby for the forehead, stay still and rest. The fever will break. This is a delicate situation in children as a rapidly rising temperature can trigger a febrile seizure. There is no evidence that long term damage happens from febrile seizures. Get the input of your Naturopathic Doctor before using a fever reducer. Most adults can not spike a fever above 101-102. For fevers above 102, consult with your naturopathic doctor. If a temperature is running 99 to 102 degrees, you can use the magic sock therapy (see handout), or put a cold towel on the abdomen and cover with wool and leave for 20 minutes as the body warms it up. These will decrease the body temperature by 1 degree or return to normal if the body is ready to do this Convalescing - Very Important! Perhaps one of the most neglected areas of medicine in the last 70 years is the idea of convalescence. We often feel better before our body is ready to resume normal activities. Allow 3-5 days of time to rest and rejuvenate after you feel better. Follow this protocol until you are 100% better, THEN continue for 2-3 days more to ensure full recovery. *This protocol is intended for short term immune boosting (Max: 30 days). * If symptoms persist beyond 30 days, consult with your Naturopathic Doctor. Need individualized guidance? If you are unsure whether this protocol fits your situation—or symptoms continue to return—consider working one-on-one with Dr. Tice for an individualized review. You can apply to work with me HERE. In Health, DrTice Important note Consult Dr. Tice or your healthcare professional before beginning if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take prescription medications, have an autoimmune, thyroid, kidney, or liver condition, have surgery planned, or already use supplements containing zinc or selenium. This indicates underlying imbalances in the body. Digestion is the command center for health. By implementing the Constipation Checklist, you can take proactive steps to support healthy digestion and bowel movements. Remember, seeking guidance from a healthcare professional is essential if constipation issues persists beyond 30 days despite these measures. I would strongly consider getting a food intolerance evaluation. You can do that here. You do not have to be a patient to order a food test. You can do that HERE .
