Long Covid Syndrome, 90-Day Jump Start Protocol

5 more items in Long Covid Syndrome, 90-Day Jump Start ProtocolIn general with Long Covid Syndrome, we are seeing: 1. Endothelial Damage 2. Increase in oxidative stress 3. Mitochondrial damage 4. Neuroinflammation A study out of BMJ (https://nutrition.bmj.com/content/early/2021/05/18/bmjnph-2021-000272) showed that those that ate a plant-based diet (i.e. full of antioxidants) had less chance of getting very ill from Covid (and other studies have done similar research on long Covid), so from a lifestyle treatment aspect we need to be consuming more plants for antioxidants! As for supplements, the following are good to consider as they address the above effects of Long Covid: - Magnesium (very important for mitochondria): 200mg twice daily - Omega 3s (ideally test, but lower inflammation): 2000-4000mg daily - B Complex (cofactors for many many biological processes): 1 capsule daily - Multivitamin to cover other cofactors - CoQ10 to support mitochondria (I like combining this with omegas): 100mg daily - Nitric oxide support (for endothelial damage): Twice daily (aim for at least 3000mg of citrulline or arginine) - Anti-inflammatory nutraceuticals (e.g. resveratrol, NAC, curcumin) - Free form amino acids (because we're seeing a drop in these, and amino acids are building blocks of so many things in our body): Ideally on empty stomach, twice daily Note, this is not medical advice. It's best to ideally test before supplements, and work with a healthcare practitioner for any new oral treatments that you take (including over-the-counter supplements).
My Favorite Probiotics

15 more items in My Favorite ProbioticsThere is a lot of research on the microbiome and how it affects human health (in particular, it has a big role in immune function, metabolism, absorption of nutrients - and production of nutrients, hormone metabolism, and more). As we learn more about the microbiome, we are recognizing that frequent antibiotic use, stress, over-the-counter anti-inflammatories, chronic dental issues, a nutrient-poor diet, and more are affecting the optimal function of the microbiome. As Dr. Michael Ruscio notes in his book Healthy Gut Healthy You, there are 3 categories of probiotics that may help human health: 1. Lactobacillulus and Bifidobacterium (the most common species we see in probiotics, which are bacteria-based) 2. Saccharomyces boulardii (a yeast-based probiotic) 3. Soil-based or spore-based (which literally came from studies on soil!) I like to add a fourth option: 4. Prebiotics (ideally with food, but can start with a supplement) A trial of one of each of the above can help up a lot of people, taken for 8-12 weeks daily, with prebiotics (aka what "feeds" probiotics...ideally via fruit/veggie/legume fibers). After this time, I often recommend maintaining at 3x/week and eating at least 3 cups of fiber-rich foods to try to keep these microbes around! Please note that the soil-based probiotics can be strong, and cause nausea, abdominal pain, and more. Please open a capsule and use over a few days to make sure you can tolerate it. When I started one of these, although I've only ever been to the emergency room one (for pneumonia) I almost had to go to the emergency room from the cramping I experienced (I took an entire capsule). Also, just like any of my recommendations, please only use a few at a time (and discontinue use if you see no benefits to your health within 6-8 weeks, or if you have unwanted side effects at any time). And discuss use of these with a knowledgeable healthcare practitioner before purchasing.
EBV: Addressing Immunomodulation

10 more items in EBV: Addressing ImmunomodulationWhen addressing EBV, there are 3 key areas to address: 1. Virus replication (aka virus "birth control") 2. Lowering inflammation (specifically the NFkB type, which promotes virus replication) 3. Support the immune system to keep EBV in its latent stage (aka "hibernation" mode). When I create a protocol for my patients, I use one supplement for each of the above for at least 2 months in addition to the "non-negotiables": - Adequate sleep even if this is 12 hours a day - Avoiding foods that contribute to inflammation - Limiting physical/emotional stressors that block the ability of the immune system to do its job - which no supplement can alter! The following options are not considered personalized medical treatment, so please consult a knowledgeable healthcare practitioner before purchasing any of them! Just like pharmaceuticals, there are risks to taking supplements and many can interact negatively with other treatments. This is why I only recommend taking only a few supplements at a time! And please only purchase 1-2 at a time, if you choose to purchase these after discussing with your healthcare practitioner. If you do not feel a benefit within 6-8 weeks, or experience unwanted side effects at any time, discontinue use.

These can all be taken as one capsule daily (or powder option provided).
For Those Prone to Constipation

5 more items in For Those Prone to ConstipationIn my clinical experience, most patients skip "foundations" of good gut motility but supplements can support daily bowel movements as one works on the foundations: 1. Adequate hydration (often with electrolytes since a lot of water is purified to remove these) 2. Movement/stretching particularly involving gentle twisting of the abdomen 3. Mix of 30-50 grams of soluble and insoluble fiber from food which support the microbiome and increase fluid in the intestines - fruits and legumes/grains are highest in fibers and great for gut health but veggies also provide high water content with smaller doses of fiber. These are basic supplements I use for those prone to constipation, and all are best taken in the evening. Please continue to work with a qualified healthcare provider and inform him/her of any supplements you choose to take. Decrease dosage or discontinue use if you experience persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, blood in stool, or other symptoms that warrant a visit with a health care practitioner.
