Avoid the synthetic noncaloric sweeteners aspartame (and related acesulfame, neotame, and advantame), sucralose, and saccharine. Avoid emulsifying agents such as polysorbate 80 and carboxymethylcellulose. Choose organic foods whenever possible. Avoid all wheat and grains and be prepared for the opioid withdrawal process that accompanies this dietary change. Of course, consult your doctor to do this or get a wellinformed doctor to help you. Replace essential nutrients, lacking in modern diets, that impact the microbiome and intestinal barrier: vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil, iodine, and magnesium. Drink Clove Green Tea, which rebuilds a healthy intestinal mucus barrier. Begin a four-week course of curcumin, 300-600 milligrams twice per day, to rebuild the intestinal barrier and address dysbiosis. “In order to not overwhelming, I've broken down the program into bite-sized pieces spread out over four weeks. This way, you can take seven days to get each part of the program right, building an effective and complete program over a total of four weeks. In the first week, we address all the factors that have disrupted our bowel flora over our lifetimes, or at least the factors we are able to address at this point in our lives. As mentioned, we cannot undo certain factors, such as having been delivered by C-section instead of vaginally, but we can banish all synthetic sweeteners and emulsifiers and sources of glyphosate. Don't worry: this does not mean that we cannot enjoy safe, natural sweeteners or savor a bowl of chocolate mint ice cream- -we simply must choose safer alternatives that will not negatively impact the microbiome. In the second week, we tackle the issue of diet, eliminating factors that encourage unhealthy microbes and increase intestinal permeability. We also introduce nutritional supplements that further support the microbiome, strengthen the intestinal mucus barrier, and reduce endotoxemia. In week 3, we dive deeper into learning how and why it is crucial to feed the microbial universe in your abdomen so that the right microbes proliferate and maintain order on your behalf. These are the steps you'll take to correct microbiome-disrupting factors: Avoid sugar--in all its forms. We avoid sucrose, dextrose, high-fructose corn syrup, coconut sugar, brown sugar, agave nectar, turbinado sugar, maltose, maltitol, maltodextrin, rice syrup, and the dozens of other code names for various forms of sugar-they're all sugar and they all cultivate unhealthy bacterial and fungal species even after just a few days of consumption. Avoid synthetic, noncaloric sweeteners. Avoid aspartame and related acesulfame, neotame, advantame, sucralose, saccharine, and all foods sweetened with them. This means that nearly all "diet" sodas are off the menu. Banish emulsifying agents. Especially avoid polysorbate 80 and carboxymethylcellulose but also carrageenan, sodium stearoyl lactate, and lecithin. Choose organic. Minimize exposure to herbicides, pesticides, anti. biotics, and genetically modified foods that also contain glyphosate and endotoxin by choosing organically grown and raised foods. Filter drinking water. Filter tap water to avoid chlorine, chloramine, and fluoride. Avoid wheat and grains. By eliminating wheat and grain foods from your diet, you avoid the protein gliadin, which increases intestinal permeability and slows intestinal peristalsis (the natural propulsive movement of the GI tract). You are also thereby reducing exposure to the antibiotic effects of the herbicide glyphosate and avoiding a major source of intestinal inflammation. This 2 Document ID: 63b5cddf9f7c35269d7942c0 01-06-2023 Gut Repair Phases 4R for Laura Orser, January 15, 2023 Prepared for Laura Orser ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● alone is a big step. (See below: Wheat and Grains: The Great Health Disrupters.) Limit net carbs. Keep the amount of carbohydrates you eat to no more than 15 grams per meal. (See box on page 179: The Blessings of Normal Blood Sugar.) Hydrate. Drink more than usual, and lightly salt food and water. Go light on alcohol. Have no more than one or two servings of alcohol per day. Be a teetotaler if you're trying to lose weight. Get off microbiome-disrupting drugs. Work with your healthcare provider to eliminate or reduce the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs like ibuprofen and acetaminophen), stomach acid-suppressing drugs, and statin cholesterol drugs. Minimize exposure to antibiotics. Accept a prescription only when it is truly necessary. Opt for real, single-ingredient foods, preferably those that don't require a label. Avocados and eggs are safe, as are broccoli, salmon, and a handful of almond-no added sugar or synthetic sweeteners The following ponents of wheat and grains that impact GI health: Gliadin: Gliadin and gliadin-derived peptide are directly toxic to the intestinal wall Removing gliadin thereby removes a potent bowel toxin. Gliadin also breaks down normal intestinal barriers, allowing foreign substances, including gliadin itself, entry into the bloodstream. This is the initiating process for many, perhaps most, autoimmune diseases while it also amplifies bacterial endotoxemia? The gliadin protein of wheat initiates autoimmune disease- -would be a death sentence for grains in the diet.) Gliadin-derived opioids: Just as opioid drugs such as oxycodone palate and morphine cause constipation, so do gliadin-derived opioids slow intestinal peristalsis and cause constipation. I have seen the worst kind of constipation in which people move their bowels only every few weeks, a condition labeled obstipation, reverse within days of banishing gliadin-derived opioids from the diet.) Slowed peristalsis is a major issue in many cases of SIBO, and it can be reversed in the majority with wheat and grain elimination. Wheat germ agglutinin (WGA): WGA is a pest-resistant compound in wheat. Farmers and agricultural scientists have selected wheat strains for their greater WGA content to enhance the plant's resistance to molds and insects. But WGA is also a potent bowel toxin that damages intestinal villi (the hair-like projections on the intestinal wall that enhance nutrient absorption) as it passes through the GI tract. WGA also blocks the hormone cholecystokinin (see box on page 183: Lessons Learned from Gallstones that provokes the gallbladder to release bile and the pancreas 3 Document ID: 63b5cddf9f7c35269d7942c0 01-06-2023 Gut Repair Phases 4R for Laura Orser, January 15, 2023 Prepared for Laura Orser ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● to release pancreatic enzymes to help digest food. WGA thereby impairs digestion, causing symptoms like heartburn, and adds to the risk for gallstones.* HOW TO MAKE SIBO SUPER GUT YOGURT Alternatively, you can make a mixed-culture yogurt by fermenting L. reuteri in combination with 2 tablespoons of one or more of the other yogurts you have fermented or their starter preparation (e.g, one capsule of B. coagulans or B. infantis). 2 tablespoons L. reuteri yogurt or 10 crushed Gastrus tablets 2 tablespoons live-culture store-bought yogurt or 2 tablespoons of each of your other yogurts or 1 capsule of each starting microbe 2 tablespoons prebiotic fiber (inulin or raw potato starch) 1 quart half-and-half or other liquid In a medium to large bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of a prior batch of L. reuteri yogurt, 2 tablespoons each of other live-culture yo-Burts (or capsules), prebiotic fiber, and 2 tablespoons of half-and-half. Make a slurry to ensure the prebiotic fiber does not dump. Sir until well mixed. Stir in the remaining half-and-half. little to none left after fermentation. Start with either a capsule of probiotic with at least 2 billion CFI one or more species or 2 tablespoons of a commercial kefir, which contain ten or more species. You can also combine different that include different bacterial species to increase the number of fermenting species. 1 capsule probiotic or 2 tablespoons of kefir (if combining kefirs, use 2 tablespoons of each product) 2 tablespoons sugar (sucrose) or prebiotic fiber (inulin or raw potato starch) 1 quart half-and-half or other liquid In a medium-sized bowl, combine the contents of the probiotic capsule with the sugar and 2 tablespoons of organic half-and-half Make a slurry to ensure the sugar dissolves or the prebiotic fiber does not clump. Stir until well mixed. Stir in the remaining half and-half. Cover lightly (e.g, with plastic wrap), place in your fermenting device, and ferment at 106°F for 36 hours. To make future batches, use 2 tablespoons of curds or whey from a prior batch. The end result will be t
