Lifestyle recommendations

Nutrition
  • Nutrition: Choose One Strategy and Learn From Your Response

Choose one nutrition strategy to follow consistently rather than trying to combine several diets at once.

You have three options in the attached resources:

    • Elimination Diet: best when you want to investigate whether certain foods may be influencing how you feel. Follow the structured elimination phase, then reintroduce foods methodically so you can learn from your response rather than remaining unnecessarily restricted.
    • Mediterranean Diet: a flexible whole-food approach that emphasizes vegetables, fruit, olive oil, fish, legumes, nuts, seeds, and minimally processed foods. This may be the easiest strategy to maintain long term.
    • Ketogenic Diet: a very-low-carbohydrate approach designed to create nutritional ketosis. This requires more planning around carbohydrate intake, hydration, electrolytes, and medications that can be affected by carbohydrate restriction.

    For the first 4 weeks:

    • Choose one strategy.
    • Follow it consistently enough to learn from it.
    • Use the attached meal plan when available instead of trying to create new meals every day.
    • Notice changes in joint stiffness, comfort, digestion, energy, sleep, and overall function.
    • Avoid changing several other major variables at the same time when possible.

If you choose the elimination diet, begin systematic food reintroduction after the elimination phase rather than assuming removed foods need to stay out permanently.

Movement
  • Movement: Protect Mobility, Strength, and Function

Movement is part of the plan, not an afterthought. Regular exercise is strongly recommended in the American College of Rheumatology's integrative RA guideline. PubMed

Build your movement routine around four areas:

    • Mobility and range of motion: gently move the major joints through a comfortable range each day. A few minutes daily is more useful than waiting until stiffness becomes severe.
    • Strength: work the major muscle groups 2 to 3 times per week as tolerated. Stronger muscles can help support joints and preserve function.
    • Aerobic activity: walking, cycling, swimming, water exercise, or another activity you tolerate well. Gradually work toward regular moderate activity across the week rather than trying to do everything at once.
    • Balance and body awareness: gentle yoga, tai chi, balance work, or similar activities can support mobility, coordination, and confidence with movement.

Start where you are. During periods of increased joint symptoms, reduce intensity or duration rather than assuming all movement needs to stop.

If you have significant joint damage, instability, marked swelling, neurological symptoms, difficulty walking, or uncertainty about what is safe, have your rheumatologist, physical therapist, or other qualified rehabilitation professional help individualize your program.

For now I would link this to the RA hub rather than invent a new exercise URL:

Sleep
  • Sleep: Create a Consistent Recovery Routine

Sleep deserves deliberate attention because RA, discomfort, fatigue, medications, stress, and other health conditions can all affect sleep quality and daytime energy.

    For the next 12 weeks:

    • Keep your wake time and bedtime as consistent as reasonably possible.
    • Give yourself enough time in bed to obtain adequate sleep rather than trying to function on chronically shortened sleep.
    • Create a 30 to 60 minute wind-down period before bed with lower light, less stimulation, and a predictable routine.
    • Reduce late-evening behaviors that repeatedly interfere with your sleep, such as heavy meals, excess alcohol, or stimulating screen use.
    • Get daylight and appropriate physical activity during the day.
    • If discomfort interferes with sleep, discuss pain control and nighttime symptoms with your medical team rather than simply accepting chronically disrupted sleep.

Pay attention to persistent clues that something more may need investigation. If you regularly wake unrefreshed, have significant daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, restless legs, or insomnia that continues despite improving your routine, discuss those symptoms with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Stress Management
  • Stress Management: Build a Daily Reset You Can Actually Repeat

Managing rheumatoid arthritis can itself create stress. The objective is not to eliminate stress from your life. It is to create reliable ways to help your nervous system and your daily behavior recover from it.

Choose one simple practice and do it every day for the next 4 weeks:

    • 5 to 10 minutes of slow breathing
    • mindfulness or meditation
    • prayer or reflective practice
    • gentle yoga or stretching
    • quiet time outdoors
    • journaling
    • another activity that reliably helps you feel calmer and more grounded

Also consider the parts of stress management that are easy to overlook:

    • Maintain contact with people who support you.
    • Build predictable routines around meals, sleep, movement, and medication.
    • Use the attached Goal-Setting Worksheet to choose only one or two realistic behavior goals at a time.
    • Use the Action Plan to decide exactly what you will do, when you will do it, and how you will make it happen. The worksheets themselves emphasize realistic SMART goals, behavior change, and practical planning. Goal Setting Action Plan
    • If anxiety, depression, persistent distress, isolation, or difficulty coping is becoming a significant part of your experience, involve an appropriate mental-health professional rather than trying to manage everything yourself.
