Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)

7 more items in Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)It is quite helpful to culture and identify the source of the infection. It is highly recommended to evaluate for involvement of candida or another fungus / yeast. Restoring proper pH is also a key consideration -- if we haven't discussed how to complete a "Hydrochloric Acid Loading Challenge", you can check out the "HCL Protocol" on FullScript and then reach out before you do or start anything, please! If you are experiencing chronic UTIs or have been treated with multiple rounds of antibiotics, deeper investigation into the gut for leaky gut, SIBO, or other digestive issues should be evaluated and consideration of addressing biofilms should be discussed with Dr. Lauren. It is not advised to do a biofilm protocol without proper guidance and precautions! DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONS: * Increase raw and fresh foods. Consider raw, fresh pressed juices with celery, watermelon, and parsley which have diuretic effects) * Add garlic to your daily life as a broad-spectrum natural antibiotic (1-2 fresh garlic cloves daily) * Avoid caffeine! It causes contraction of the bladder sphincter =( * Avoid coffee, citrus fruits, tomatoes, vinegar, and yeasts * Remove alcohol, refined / processed foods * Avoid dairy, gluten and other foods that you may have sensitivities to (remember, sensitivities are different than allergies!) * The consumption of non-organic chicken and pork have been associated with UTIs due to the presence of E.coli in these foods HEALING TEAS AND TONICS * Uva Ursi * Increase water intake or drink a minimum of 60 oz of clean, purified water daily (avoid well, city, and inexpensive bottled water) to promote diuresis and assist in flushing the system more quickly * Drink 300 mL of pure, UNSWEETENED organic cranberry juice daily and/or take D-Mannose SUPPLEMENT SUGGESTIONS: If you know the source of the infection, choosing the best product gets easier. E-Coli is most common and my top choice would be: D-MANNOSE For more info, check out my blog post here). Not all products are created equal and some inexpensive brands source D-Mannose from corn which has a much higher incidence of reactions and is significantly lower quality than sources from berries. Douglas Labs is a reputable and trustworthy source for D-Mannose powder. And yes ... I prefer powder over capsule! Be sure to drink plenty of water between doses to help flush the system. ACUTE DOSAGE: 1 scoop every 2-3 hours for 5 days. PREVENTATIVE DOSAGE: Anywhere between 1/2 scoop daily to 1 scoop every few days / or once a week. MONOLAURIN If you have a UTI from a gram-positive bacteria ( Clostridium, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, Listeria, Bacillus) and not E. Coli, my recommendation would be MONOLAURIN. It works by disturbing the integrity of the cell membrane of bacteria. This prevents replication and allows for easier work for your immune system in combating the infection. UVA URSI If you aren't going to drink it as a tea, consider a capsule or tincture as it's a great diuretic and has natural antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that appear to be a perfect fit for the urinary tract! Take for short periods of time, generally not longer than a month. PROBIOTICS No matter the type of bacteria, supporting your inner ecosystem and immune system with specific strains of probiotics has been shown to prevent recurrence of UTIs. I prefer S BOULARDII which is actually a beneficial yeast. You can also focus on probiotic-rich food sources like fermented dairy products like kefir and yogurt (if dairy is not an issue) and other fermented foods (miso, sauerkraut, kim chee, kombucha, etc.) Unless you have done a stool test to determine your microbiome needs, I generally don't recommend traditional probiotics with lactobacillus! LACTOFERRIN For chronic UTIs, the addition of LACTOFERRIN may be a helpful addition for a few months. I generally recommend a 90-day round of Lactoferrin as it is a component of the immune system with antimicrobial activity, and is part of our innate defense. FINAL THOUGHTS AND CONSIDERATIONS: If you are dealing with a recurrent UTI problem, it may be necessary to dive deeper into other issues such as: 1. pH issues and the need for the "hydrochloric acid loading challenge" 2. Problems involving biofilms. The development of a biofilm can make infections extremely hard to treat because of the "protective dome" that forms around microbial colonies, essentially hiding them from the immune system and/or antimicrobial agents.
Hydrochloric Acid, pH & The HCL Loading Challenge

12 more items in Hydrochloric Acid, pH & The HCL Loading ChallengeHydrochloric Acid, or HCL, is an essential component to proper digestion and gut health and even liver function. It is an essential ingredient in proper digestion and is necessary for the proper breakdown of protein. This is one of the contributing factors for food intolerances and autoimmune conditions! HCL is needed for the assimilation and / or absorption of several important nutrients, like B12. There are 15 minerals, 8 essential amino acids, and numerous vitamins that depend on HCL for absorption. This also explains why long term antacid use is linked to many conditions associated with low levels of zinc and has profound and detrimental effects on the immune system. It is also the front line defense against unwanted bacteria and parasites. This is a key piece to difficult and/or recurrent SIBO cases and can make you more susceptible to developing an H. Pylori infection (which is the #1 cause of stomach cancer). It's important! Symptoms associated with HCL deficiency include: bad breath, belching, bloating, gassiness, nausea, vomiting, loss of taste for meat, heartburn and burning in your stomach, sour taste in your mouth, hoarseness and laryngitis, weak nails, chronic yeast infections, rectal itching, and even rosacea. Common indications that you may have low levels of HCL include: - GERD, reflux, indigestion and/or heartburn - protein deficiencies - zinc, calcium, magnesium and/or iron deficiency - H. Pylori infection or stomach cancer - infections of the gut including bacterial overgrowth, SIBO, SIFO, candida, parasites - leaky gut / intestinal permeability - food intolerances (allergies and senstivities) - allergies or asthma - anemia - immune disorders, especially autoimmune conditions - thyroid issues - methylation / detoxification issues - elevated homocysteine - liver or gallbladder dysfunction (including gallstones) - cardiovascular issues SUPPLEMENT SUGGESTIONS Below are suggestions for working with and supporting Hydrochloric Acid levels of your stomach. Please be aware that I am NOT suggesting you do all of these!! Laying out different options because we are all different =) My suggestion is to choose one place to start, trial and track your results. There are a few ways you can approach this: 1. HERBAL BITTERS: a combination of bitter herbs that are known to stimulate your tongue's taste buds and receptors that should then stimulate your body's own digestive juices ... assuming you have all the cofactors and nutrients to do so! Studies also indicate that they can help tone the valves of the digestive tract and encourage the movement of food through the gut. *Bitters are contraindicated in pregnancy, blockage of the bile ducts, acute gallbladder inflammation, acute gastrointestinal inflammation and intestinal blockage! 2. BETAINE HYDROCHLORIDE: A more direct approach to restore the pH of the stomach to its proper acidity level. For people with a high need for HCL, this is usually the quickest approach to get things back on track. There are different potencies and formulations depending on your needs / sensitivities. Hydrochloric acid / TMG is necessary for supporting the methylation pathway of detoxification and proper metabolism of homocysteine. 3. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR: Bragg's ACV is a popular suggestion for HCL support. It has worked miracles for some people but I exercise caution with restoring stomach function this way because of it's possible issues with candida and yeast overgrowth. It's also often not potent enough to use a therapeutic product. In general I prefer capsules over tablets to be sure they are easily broken down in the stomach. Tablets can sometimes be difficult to break down but for people that are more sensitive and need a lower dose, the tablets listed below are the lowest formulas I can find of HCL. THE HYDROCHLORIC ACID LOADING TEST This is important to listen carefully and follow closely! Please pay attention =) *******DO NOT do this if you have hyperchlorhydria, stomach cancer, ulcers or a pre-ulcerative condition!!******* (17) Understanding Hydrochloric Acid and Completing the HCL Loading Test - YouTube TAKING AND TRACKING YOUR BODY'S pH AT HOME Checking your pH can be a beneficial guide in tracking your pH progress and helps us see if your body and/or urine is overly acidic, overly alkaline, or in balance. To keep us alive our blood pH must stay between 7.35 and 7.45. To maintain this pH, the blood will push acidic waste (toxins) into the fat tissues for storage. Yes, that is where the toxins are stored in the fat cells! A healthy urine pH is typically around 6.5 to 7.0 A healthy salivary pH is generally considered normal between 6.5 to 7.3 FINAL THOUGHTS ... I am a BIG fan of squeezing fresh LEMON into water and consuming daily for almost all of my patients (myself included!) .. especially when drinking from unknown water sources at restaurants or from your tap or well. It is a great way to maintain and encourage proper pH balance in your body ... a great habit to start children on. One IMPORTANT thing to consider is that lemon can break down the enamel on your teeth, so I suggest brushing your teeth and/or chewing gum that doesn't contain sugars and/or artificial toxic sweeteners that will cancel out the benefits of all of your efforts!
