Hair loss is a very complex issue because it can be impacted by so many varying factors. To start, let’s acknowledge that there is a highly emotional element to losing your hair - it can be devastating to your self-confidence and esteem, from both the external appearance aspect and the internal dialogue of “what must be wrong with me health-wise?” if this situation is taking place. Please know I see you, and that sensitivity is one of the main drivers of why I created this protocol Now let’s dive in: What exactly is hair? Hair is basically an external, usually cylindrical, keratinized protein structure growing outward from the epidermis. The key here is that it is an external protein - anything that affects protein synthesis, balance, & homeostasis inside the body is going to affect hair quality, health, & growth. The most prevalent causes of hair loss and hair disorders include: 1) Not eating enough protein and/or not adequately digesting and assimilating dietary protein. 2) Inadequate Thyroid function (often even if blood tests show values in a normal range). 3) Lack of the full spectrum of B-Vitamin intake or proper assimilation of these nutrients. 4) An overwhelming amount of stress or a compromised internal response to stress (typically due to Adrenal insufficiency). 5) Any imbalance between Estrogen and Progesterone or a deficiency of either. 6) Too much Testosterone converting into DiHydroTestosterone (DHT). This is typically due to the overactivity or production of the enzyme 5-Alpha-Reductase. Elevated DHT is a leading cause of male pattern baldness and affects some women as well. 7) Genetics: certain genetic variants predispose both men and women to hair loss and even though most scientists would support the concept that nothing can be done about this, I take the position - based on my experience - that genetic expression is influenced by diet, cellular nutrition, hormonal balance, and lifestyle.
