Lifestyle recommendations
Nutrition
Prioritize a heart-healthy, minimally processed diet.
Emphasize vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, lean proteins, fish, and healthy unsaturated fats. Increase dietary fiber while limiting excess sodium, added sugars, refined carbohydrates, processed meats, and foods high in saturated or trans fats. Individual nutritional recommendations may vary based on blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose levels, weight, and other health conditions.
Movement
Prioritize regular aerobic activity and resistance training.
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, along with resistance training at least 2 days per week, as tolerated. Reduce prolonged sitting and incorporate regular walking and daily movement. Exercise recommendations should be individualized for patients with cardiovascular disease or exercise limitations.
Sleep
Prioritize consistent, restorative sleep.
Aim for approximately 7–9 hours nightly and maintain a regular sleep schedule. Poor sleep can negatively affect blood pressure, appetite, glucose regulation, weight, and cardiovascular health. Discuss persistent snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, excessive daytime sleepiness, or other symptoms suggestive of sleep apnea with your healthcare provider.
Stress Management
Incorporate regular stress-management practices.
Consider mindfulness, meditation, breathing exercises, outdoor activity, yoga, social connection, or other relaxing activities. Chronic stress can adversely affect sleep, blood pressure, eating behaviors, and overall cardiometabolic health.
