Lifestyle recommendations
Nutrition
- Eat magnesium-rich foods: leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews, black beans, avocado, and dark chocolate. Food and supplements work well together.
- Take your magnesium with a meal, ideally your evening meal if sleep is your focus.
- Keep caffeine to the morning or early afternoon. It can stay in your system for hours and get in the way of sleep.
- Go easy on alcohol, especially close to bedtime. It may help you fall asleep but tends to make sleep lighter and more broken.
- Finish dinner 2 to 3 hours before bed, with protein, fiber, and healthy fats so you don't go to bed overly full or overly hungry.
- Try a small evening snack. If you tend to wake in the night, a small snack with protein and healthy fat about an hour before bed may help keep your blood sugar steadier overnight. Ideas: a spoonful of almond butter, a small handful of nuts, plain Greek yogurt, or a hard-boiled egg. Keep it light, not a second dinner.
- Stay hydrated through the day, and taper off in the last hour or two before bed so you're not up at night.
Sleep
- Keep a consistent bedtime and wake time, even on weekends.
- Take your magnesium with your evening meal or 30 to 60 minutes before bed.
- Dim the lights and put screens away for the last 30 to 60 minutes of the evening.
- Keep your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.
- Finish caffeine by early afternoon, and go easy on alcohol close to bedtime, since it can fragment sleep.
- If your mind is busy at night, write down tomorrow's to-do list before bed.
Stress Management
- Practice slow breathing for 5 minutes a day. Try inhaling for 4 counts and exhaling for 6. Longer exhales help your body shift toward calm. It works well at bedtime or during a tense moment.
- Get outside for a short walk in daylight. Even 10 to 15 minutes can help you reset, especially midday.
- Build in a wind-down window. For the last 30 to 60 minutes of the evening, put away work, news, and social media. Try reading, light stretching, or a quiet cup of tea instead.
- Add a warm soak or gentle heat to your wind-down. A warm bath about 60 to 90 minutes before bed, such as with my Full Reset Soak, can help your body relax and cool down into sleep. A far-infrared sauna mat like the HigherDOSE mat is another option. Keep sessions short, drink water, and stop if you feel dizzy or overheated.
- Empty your mind onto paper. If your thoughts race at night, write tomorrow's to-do list or a few lines about the day before bed.
- Protect small pockets of rest during the day. A few quiet minutes between tasks add up more than one big break.
- Stay connected. A conversation with a friend or family member is one of the most reliable stress relievers.
- Start small and be consistent. One habit you'll actually keep beats five you won't.
Why this matters
- Magnesium works best alongside daily habits that help your body settle. Small, steady practices tend to build resilience over time.
Heat safety
- Check with me before using a sauna mat or hot bath if you are pregnant, have heart disease or low blood pressure, take medications that affect heat tolerance, or are sensitive to heat.
Disclosure
- Full Reset Soak is my own product.
Support
- If stress, anxiety, or low mood is affecting your daily life or lasting for weeks, please reach out to me or your healthcare provider. You don't have to manage it alone.
Other
- Aim for a 20 to 30 minute walk most days. Morning or midday daylight helps set your sleep-wake rhythm.
- Add gentle stretching or yoga in the evening to help your body wind down.
- If you strength train, 2 to 3 sessions a week supports sleep quality and stress resilience.
- Try to finish vigorous workouts at least 2 to 3 hours before bed, since intense late exercise can leave some people feeling wired.
- Consistency matters more than intensity, so start with what feels manageable.
