Nutrition
  • Nutrition: The Foundation of Your Health

The most powerful tool for improving your health isn't found in a supplement bottle—it's on your plate.

Supplements are designed to fill nutritional gaps, not replace a healthy diet. At Steady State Health, we believe in building a strong nutritional foundation first, then using targeted supplements to optimize your health.

    Our General Nutrition Goals

For most midlife adults, we recommend aiming for:

    • 1,600 calories per day (this may vary based on your age, size, activity level, and goals)
    • 80–100 grams of protein daily to support muscle, metabolism, healthy aging, and satiety
    • 30–50 grams of fiber daily, with an emphasis on soluble fiber to support cholesterol, blood sugar, gut health, and healthy estrogen metabolism
    • Healthy fats from foods like olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish while limiting saturated fat
    • Plenty of colorful fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains to maximize vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants

    Our Preferred Eating Pattern

We generally recommend a Mediterranean-style diet because it is one of the most well-researched eating patterns for supporting heart health, brain health, blood sugar, inflammation, and healthy aging. It is sustainable, flexible, and focuses on nourishing your body rather than restricting it.

Remember: Food is the foundation. Supplements are the support. When you combine great nutrition with targeted supplementation, you're giving your body the tools it needs to thrive.

Movement

  • Our goal is a stronger, healthier body that will serve you for decades to come.

    Your Two Biggest Priorities

If you only focus on two forms of exercise, choose these:

    1. Walk Most Days

Walking is one of the most underrated forms of exercise.

    It helps:

    • Improve insulin sensitivity
    • Burn fat efficiently
    • Lower blood sugar after meals
    • Reduce stress and cortisol
    • Improve mood and sleep
    • Support heart health
    • Increase daily energy expenditure without overwhelming your body

    Aim for:

    • 7,000–10,000 steps per day, or
    • 30–45 minutes of walking most days of the week

Even a 10-minute walk after meals can significantly improve blood sugar control.

Don't worry about walking fast enough to be "exercise." Consistency matters far more than intensity.

    2. Lift Weights 2–3 Times Per Week

Strength training is the single best investment you can make in your long-term health.

As women enter perimenopause and menopause, declining estrogen naturally increases the loss of muscle and bone. GLP-1 medications can accelerate muscle loss if protein intake and resistance training are neglected.

    Strength training helps:

    • Preserve lean muscle during weight loss
    • Maintain or increase metabolism
    • Build stronger bones
    • Improve balance and stability
    • Reduce injury risk
    • Improve posture
    • Support healthy joints
    • Make everyday activities easier

You do not need to become a bodybuilder.

You simply need to challenge your muscles regularly.

    This might include:

    • Dumbbells
    • Resistance bands
    • Weight machines
    • Bodyweight exercises
    • Pilates
    • Functional strength training

The best strength program is the one you'll actually continue doing.

    Start Where You Are

Many women worry they have to join a gym or lift heavy weights immediately.

    You don't.

If you're new to exercise, recovering from injury, dealing with joint pain, or living with conditions like hypermobility, arthritis, or chronic pain, start gently and build gradually.

    Some great options include:

    • Walking
    • Pilates
    • Water exercise
    • Resistance bands
    • Chair exercises
    • Working with a personal trainer who understands midlife women

    Every small step counts.

    Protect Your Muscle

Think of your protein intake and strength training as teammates.

    Protein provides the building blocks.

Strength training tells your body where to use them.

Without resistance exercise, your body has less reason to keep muscle while you're losing weight.

That is why we recommend combining:

    • 80–100 grams of protein daily
    • Strength training 2–3 days each week

This combination helps your body preferentially lose fat while preserving lean muscle.

    Don't Chase Exhaustion

More exercise is not always better.

Many women in midlife are juggling careers, caregiving, disrupted sleep, hormonal changes, and significant stress. Excessive high-intensity exercise can sometimes leave you feeling more fatigued instead of healthier.

A balanced routine often works best:

    • Walk most days.
    • Lift weights 2–3 times each week.
    • Include stretching or mobility work.
    • Prioritize recovery and sleep.
    • Increase activity gradually over time.

    Remember, consistency beats perfection.

    Think Beyond the Scale

Exercise may not always produce dramatic changes on the scale—and that's okay.

Some of the biggest benefits happen where you can't immediately see them:

    • More energy
    • Better balance
    • Improved mood
    • Lower blood sugar
    • Stronger bones
    • Better posture
    • Improved confidence
    • Greater independence as you age

These changes are just as important as weight loss.

    Our Philosophy

At Steady State Health, we don't believe movement is a punishment for eating.

We believe exercise is one of the most powerful forms of self-care.

Move because you want to protect your muscles.
Move because you want stronger bones.
Move because you want to play with your grandchildren, travel, hike, garden, or simply feel good in your body.

The number on the scale may change over the coming months, but the strength you build today can benefit you for years to come.

Strong is the goal. Weight loss is simply one of the many benefits.
