9 more items in Protein Powder RecommendationsTHINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A PROTEIN INCLUDE: • The sources of the protein (plant, animal, paleo, etc.) • Quality of that source (grass – fed whey, organic, sustainable) • Minimal ingredients (you don’t need it to be a multivitamin too) • No artificial ingredients (no artificial colors, sweeteners, or flavorings) • Natural sweeteners only (stevia, monkfruit extract are good) • Taste & texture: pleasant taste, no after – taste, mixes well, not gritty or chalky There are varying sources of protein powder including: Collagen Protein Powder: Collagen protein powder is touted for its anti – aging benefits with joints, as well as hair, skin, and nails. Collagen dissolves well in liquids – both cold and hot – so can be added in flavored or unflavored versions to most any beverage. Collagen peptides are generally from marine or land animals. Most collagen proteins on the market are about 10g protein/serving. Whey Protein Powder: Whey protein is derived from dairy, and has a great texture and ‘mixability’. Many people who have sensitivities to dairy may still be able to tolerate whey protein, as many dairy sensitivities are to the casein protein of dairy. Paleo Protein Powder : Most Paleo–based protein powders are made from hydrolyzed beef protein (flavored to taste good!). It is a great alternative to Whey for those avoiding all dairy. Plant-Based Protein Powder: Since plant – based sources are less protein dense, it may take a larger volume of protein powder (~40g scoop) to get 20 – 25g protein. Sources of ‘plant based’ protein powders include one or a combination of the following: Beans/Legumes (Soy, pea, mung bean), Grain (brown rice, quinoa), Seeds (chia, sunflower, pumpkin, flax, hemp)
