Pool Use Protocol: Mitigating Chlorine Exposure Why It Matters 1. Nutrient Depletion Chlorine exposure increases oxidative stress and depletes key nutrients required for detoxification and cellular defense: Vitamin C – Rapidly used up neutralizing chlorine and repairing oxidative damage Glutathione – Used by the liver to detoxify chlorinated compounds Selenium & Vitamin E – Work synergistically with glutathione to protect cells Zinc & Magnesium – Support detoxification enzymes, mitochondrial health, and tissue repair 2. Toxin Burden When chlorine reacts with organic matter (like sweat and skin oils), it forms disinfection byproducts (DBPs) such as: Chloramines – Linked to skin, eye, and respiratory irritation Trihalomethanes (THMs) – Associated with liver, kidney, nervous system stress, and increased long-term cancer risk These compounds are absorbed through skin , inhaled , or ingested during swimming 3. Microbiome Disruption Skin microbiome : Chlorine strips protective bacteria and lipids, compromising skin barrier Intestinal microbiome : Chlorinated water (even small amounts swallowed or absorbed) may disrupt microbial balance, impairing digestion and immunity Protective Steps Before Swimming Create a Physical Barrier Apply a thin layer of coconut oil to the skin before entering the pool. It helps: Minimize chlorine absorption through the skin Retain skin’s natural oils Protect the skin microbiome Use a Vitamin C Spray Post-Swim Vitamin C neutralizes chlorine and chloramines on the skin and hair. DIY Spray : 1 tsp sodium ascorbate or ascorbic acid 1 cup filtered water Store in a spray bottle, use immediately after swimming before showering Premade Swim Spray After Swimming: Restore + Detoxify Taking steps immediately after swimming helps neutralize chlorine , prevent skin irritation , and restore your skin’s natural defenses . 1. Rinse Off Immediately Use warm (not hot) water to rinse chlorine from skin and hair right after exiting the pool. This helps prevent absorption of disinfection byproducts (like chloramines) and protects the skin barrier. 2. Cleanse Gently with Aleavia Body Wash Aleavia Prebiotic Body Wash is free of sulfates and supports your skin’s natural microbiome. It removes chlorine without stripping beneficial bacteria, helping reduce irritation, dryness, or eczema flares. 3. Apply a Vitamin C Spray 4. Spray Topical Probiotics Support microbiome recovery by spraying topical probiotics on the skin post-rinse. Especially helpful for: Sensitive skin Kids with eczema Anyone prone to rashes post-pool Probiotic Spray 5. Rehydrate + Replenish Internally Drink filtered water with trace minerals or electrolyte drops Take your post-swim supplements: Tox-Chord Magnesium Iodine Probiotics Parotid PMG Recommended Internal Support: Use these day of Tox-Chord A homeopathic remedy designed to assist the body in clearing environmental toxins, including chlorine and pool-related chemicals. Iodine Supports thyroid health and may help protect against halogen displacement (chlorine and bromine can compete with iodine at the receptor level). Also promotes detoxification of halogens. Magnesium Magnesium is depleted by chlorine exposure and stress. Supports detoxification, cellular repair, and muscle function. Probiotics Supports gut and skin microbiome recovery after chemical exposure. Helps rebalance microbial diversity that may be disrupted by chlorine ingestion or absorption. Parotid PMG (Standard Process) Glandular support for the parotid glands, which play a role in detoxification and immune surveillance. May be helpful for draining environmental burdens, especially in children. Optional: Glutathione or NAC ***Choose the probiotic that is appropriate for you***
