I love that we are able to share big events with each other, but realize that with all the bustle of daily life, we don't always get a chance to fill each other in on our plans for the future (e.g. baby-making). For this reason, I'm passing along these recommendations for prenatal supplements, which are best to start taking up to 4 months prior to conception and all the way through breast feeding. There are so many supplements on the market, making things confusing! These are the best, most reasonably priced, and accessible prenatals. Although I will receive an email notification when you purchase, I promise to keep that knowledge to myself and not even ask you about it until you are ready to share. It's just my hope that I can help give you access to the best nutrition as you take this big step in life! For those who are done baby-making, or don't plan to have children, prenatals are still a wonderful option for a daily woman's multi, so feel free to use them! If you're looking for another type of supplement, drop my a line and I'll make you a recommendation. Also, if you already have a prenatal that you love and want a nutritionist's review, send that on over. ___________ Here are my top picks for prenatal vitamins. Pricing listed here includes my discount (35%) so even though they may be a bit more expensive, you're getting the best price possible and the quality is assured. I'm also including a little info on each so you can see what you're getting. As with all prenatals, it's really hard to get everything in one pill, or even one dose. If you decide you want to supplement further I've included a good magnesium supplement in your cart. Calcium supplements are not great in terms of health promotion, so please be sure to eat plenty of full fat dairy or bone in fish (sardines and anchovies are best). If you can't do either, try the calcium supplement I've included, it's best for absorption. If a supplement doesn't contain Retinol/vitamin A - eat liver, butter, eggs (just keep the liver consumption to a few oz/week or less) If a supplement doesn't contain enough Choline - eat eggs, everyday If a supplement doesn't contain enough calcium - eat dairy, leafy greens, sardines If a supplement doesn't contain enough magnesium - supplement with Mag. I've put a good one in the cart for you. If a supplement doesn't contain enough iron - eat beef/red meat These will just be here for you indefinitely, so peruse, order at your leisure, or not. Also, you get free shipping for orders over $50. Call me if you have any questions! xo Seeking Health Optimal Chewable: While this supplement is marketed toward individuals with the genetic polymorphisms for MTHFR (which affects the body’s ability to use folate, and which also might be connected to the incidence of neural tube defects), it contains several nutrients not available in many other supplements and can be used by anyone. Pros: Contains methylated B-vitamins, including 800mcg folate (50% from 5MTHF and 50% as calcium folinate). Contains 50% of its vitamin A from retinol, equaling 750mcg - just short of your daily requirement of 770mcg. Contains 250mg of your 450mg choline requirement. Contains more than enough iodine. Contains a good form of vitamin K (form K2, MK7). Contains magnesium, calcium, CoQ10 and herbs. You have the option of chewables, pills, and protein powder form. Possible Cons: Does not contain iron. While supplemental iron isn’t always necessary and can cause stomach upset, those who need additional iron might benefit. As with most prenatals, you’ll need additional choline and calcium. We recommend a choline supplement, and calcium-rich foods to hit these targets. With capsules, your serving size is 8 pills per day - a lot! The chewable serving size is 2 chewables, which is more convenient but offers less flexibility. What to watch out for: If you take cod liver oil or eat several ounces of liver on a given day, you might not want to consume your retinol-rich prenatal. While we love liver for its folate, choline, iron, and vitamin A content, you’ll easily hit your vitamin A target for the day with a serving of liver. Innate Response Baby and Me Pros: Contains 600mcg methylfolate, the minimum for daily intake in pregnancy. Contains 300mg of your 450mg choline requirement. Contains vitamin K in two forms, K1 and K2 (however, the company does not specify ratios of the two). Contains an easy-to-digest form of iron. Manageable serving size of 2 tablets. Possible Cons: Does not contain any vitamin A as retinol. Does not contain the minerals magnesium or calcium (this may help shrink the serving size to 2 tablets - both are bulky substances). While you can use our recommended magnesium spray, it’s more difficult to quantify how much you’re getting that way. As with most prenatals, you’ll need additional choline and calcium. We recommend a choline supplement, and calcium-rich foods to hit these targets. What to watch out for: Make sure you’re confident in your vitamin A status and dietary retinol intake to ensure you’re sufficient in vitamin A. NATURELO PRENATAL Available here - I don't get a discount on this brand but the base price is pretty good ($40 for a 60 day supply) Pros: Contains 800mcg methylfolate. Contains natural vitamin C from Acerola Cherries, the best form of whole food-based vitamin C available. Contains a good form of vitamin K (form K2, MK7). Contains a small amount of iron. Manageable serving size of 3 capsules. Non-GMO, mostly naturally-derived nutrients Possible Cons: Does not contain any vitamin A as retinol.
