Cholesterol Lowering Supplements

4 more items in Cholesterol Lowering SupplementsSupplements to reduce high cholesterol: Artichoke extract - artichoke leaf is an example of a bitter, which has shown evidence for reducing cholesterol, improving digestion as well as metabolic health. Other bitters that have been studied include bitter melon, bitter orange, etc. It remains unclear whether the benefit is attenuated when using this in a supplement (which is typically not bitter in taste!) as compared to eating bitter foods. The supplement I added in Fullscripts is just a capsule to take once daily. Berberine - has multiple benefits to reduce cholesterol, blood pressure as well as insulin sensitivity. It works best when taken 30 minutes before a meal, though the formulation I included here has noted it is not strictly necessary. 900mg daily is the recommended dose. Black seed - black seed of the Nigella plant is rich in phytochemicals which has been shown to reduce insulin resistance and cholesterol. While it may have some benefits in fatty liver disease, it does not seem to have as pronounced effects in improving other measures in this patient population. The recommended dose is about 2 grams daily (the solution linked is a little bit more concentrated than that) and is recommended to be kept in a cool area and out of sunlight to prevent oxidation. Choleste-pure: Plant sterols/stanols - have good evidence as a natural supplement to promote decreased cholesterol, most likely from their anti-oxidant properties. These substances are also found in foods, but it is extremely challenging to eat enough vegetables to get to these levels in the body. Choleste-pure supplement includes a good amount of this to support reducing cholesterol. CoEnzyme 10 - CoEnzyme 10 or CoQ10 is a key component of the anti-oxidant pathway and 500mg/day is the recommended dose to obtain through food and supplementation. It is hard to reach this level through food though, so additional supplementation is recommended, usually at doses 100-200mg/daily. The supplemented linked has been rigorously tested for purity and seemed to be a cost-effective option. Garlic complex - garlic is a supplement that has reasonable evidence behind it to lower blood pressure. It can also lower cholesterol as well. The supplement I’m recommending is from pure encapsulations which uses aged fermented garlic, which is the best studied kind. There is a bit of evidence that suggests eating 1 clove 2-3x daily with meals (raw or roasted) has a similar impact. Microwaved or pickled garlic has decreased efficacy. Omega-3’s - while there is robust evidence behind Omega-3’s reducing high cholesterol, it’s not as clear that supplementation does a good job of this compared to consumption of Omega-3’s. That said, consumption of Omega-3’s is not beneficial for everyone, especially for those who are trying to avoid animal products and because Omega-3’s in “healthy” fats is often mixed with unhealthy fats which may be counter-productive in some diets. Therefore, I’ve linked the vegan supplement here for those who would like to add a supplement to support Omega-3 consumption. This supplement also includes Algae which has its own evidence supporting that it reduces cholesterol levels.
