June 2023 Newsletter A few weeks back, my favorite couple of sweeties came to visit me for a follow up. They had been on an exploration of gut health with fantastic results, They brought in a newspaper clipping about the American Gut Project for me to read. The American Gut Project collected stool tests (11,000+ stool tests from participants across the U.S and U.K.) and analyzed microbiomes along with surveying their participants. For those new to the term “microbiome”, there’s trillions of bugs inside of us and on us that are make up a personalized ecosystem just for you! We know, through a whole lot of research, that this microbiome makes up a huge part of: digestive health, immune function, hormone balance, neurotransmitter production, detoxification, nutrient status, and much more. The Project reported findings including: · Eating 30 or more plants (veggies, fruits, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds) each week created healthier and more diverse gut microbes than those that had 10 or less per week. The more diverse the ecosystem, the better health we tend to maintain. · They also found that those with recent antibiotics (within 1 month of use) had less diversity than those that hadn't had antibiotics in over a year. Those that had antibiotics had more presence of different chemicals present in their stool samples than those that hadn’t recently taken antibiotics. · Those that regularly consumed the 30+ plants per week had less stubborn bugs and thus less antibiotic resistance than those with 10 or less. If you have heard the term “superbugs” (bugs that are evading prescription treatments, leading to more stubborn infections), this is what they’re hinting at…we don’t want these kind of bugs. · They also found similarities in the gut microbiome/species present in those with similar mental health diagnoses (such as depression). That ol' saying, "You are what you eat" is true in so many different ways and now the same can be applied to the health of the gut microbiome. Want to diversify your gut microbiome? Here’s 3 ways: · Increasing intake of a variety of plants in the diet (vegetables, fruits, beans, peas, lentils, nuts, seeds, and whole grains) · Increasing consumption of fermented foods such as raw sauerkraut (Wildbrine and Cleveland Kraut are a couple go-to brands), kombucha, kefir, kimchi. And of course, my favorite, homemade yogurt! Yogurt-making has been a fun adventure our household has been on for the past 1+ year and it’s been satisfying (and delicious). There are many ways to make yogurt suitable for all bellies (dairy, dairy free/vegan, etc). · Taking a probiotic is always a great idea and reasonable to add to a daily routine (if you struggle with the above 2 options). Here’s a rundown of some of my favorite probiotics: One of our old sayings in Naturopathic Medicine, when considering way to support overall health is: “When in doubt, 'kraut it out.” (Or “crowd” it out—with more “good” guys in the gut microbiome). Now you’re in on one of our many secrets. 😊 You can read more about the American Gut Project here: https://www.sciencedaily.com/rel.../2018/05/180515092931.htm
