View protocolCholesterol

4 more items in CholesterolHigh cholesterol is one of the key markers when evaluating risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and related problems. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), in 2015-2016, 12.5% of adults had high total cholesterol, with men having a higher rate of prevalence. In conjunction, 18% of adults had low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. ( 14 ) Achieving a healthy cholesterol serum level has a valuable impact on decreasing risk for these events, and every bit helps. A decrease of 1 mmol/L in total cholesterol correlates with lower ischemic heart disease mortality. ( 15 ) Problems with blood pressure amplify the risks found with dyslipidemia, and were found to proportionally impact risk reduction when lowering cholesterol. ( 15 ) Based on current research findings presented below, the ingredients in this protocol have demonstrated efficacy in improving cholesterol profile and potentially cardiovascular outcomes.

6 more items in General Wellness - Everyday HealthIn designing a protocol for general wellness in adults, several aspects were considered. First, what are the top causes of morbidity and mortality in North America? Second, what are some ingredients with sufficient evidence to support a wide variety of conditions or health concerns that may be broadly applicable to this population? The most common conditions affecting North American adults include cardiovascular disease (e.g. heart attack, stroke), cancer, respiratory conditions, cognitive decline, musculoskeletal disorders, and mental health concerns. ( CDC 2021 ; Vos 2020 ) Dietary and nutrient risk factors for these conditions may include low omega-3 intake ( Abdelhamid 2020 ) and low vitamin D intake ( Rejnmark 2017 ). Nutrients such as magnesium ( Mah 2021 ) and B complex vitamins ( Young 2019 ) may also reduce morbidity associated with these conditions. Lastly, the herbal adaptogen ashwagandha was chosen for its potential role in improving stress, sleep, and overall quality of life. ( Langade 2021 ; Lopresti 2019 ) While there are many ingredients that may be considered part of a general wellness protocol, the Integrative Medical Advisory Team (IMAT) has selected these based on general safety, effectiveness, and broad applicability and availability to the adult population.
View protocolImmune Health – Cold and Flu Support

6 more items in Immune Health – Cold and Flu SupportSeasonal occurrences of cold and flu are to be expected. Targeting the immune system during this time has the potential to help decrease the frequency, severity, or duration of cold and flu symptoms. Decreasing the risk of developing a cold or flu is possible through prophylactic supplementation, especially among high-risk populations, such as in children, the elderly, or those with compromised immune systems. In the event a cold or flu does occur, the desired focus of supplementation may shift to decreasing the duration and severity of symptoms. Zinc may be considered in this case; when given during the initial 24 hours of symptom onset, it has been shown to reduce the number of patients with symptoms after one week. ( Singh 2015 ) Vitamin C is another popular remedy to decrease the length of a cold and has the potential to decrease duration by approximately half a day. ( Ran 2018 ) The ingredients present in the protocol below reflect research findings that demonstrate efficacy when used prophylactically and therapeutically to support physiological immune function in regards to cold and flu.
View protocolExercise Pain & Recovery

6 more items in Exercise Pain & RecoveryDuring and especially after athletic activity, the body has a number of responses in order to help it recover and adapt. Many of these responses involve some level of local inflammation and muscle soreness that peaks within 24 to 48 hours after the exercise, usually referred to collectively as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). These processes may contribute to various functional deficits such as reduced strength and/or range of motion. The ingredients selected for this protocol may help improve symptoms of exercise-related pain and aid in recovery. For example, branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) may provide extra quantities of certain amino acids that may help to reduce markers of exercise-related damage. ( Khemtong 2021 ) Collagen acts to provide strength and elasticity to connective tissues. ( Dressler 2018 ) Curcumin reduces many inflammatory markers and may shorten recovery time from exercise. ( Fang 2020 )( Suhett 2021 ) Magnesium may reduce inflammation and cortisol levels and improve immunological function, all aiding in recovery. Finally, omega-3 fatty acids have effects on cyclooxygenase-2 expression and the metabolism of arachidonic acid. ( Ochi 2018 )
View protocolHot Flash Support

2 more items in Hot Flash SupportApproximately 50.3% to 82.1% of women going through menopause experience hot flashes and night sweats. ( 21 ) To help manage symptoms, 40-50% of women rely on the use of complementary therapies such as plant-based supplements. ( 8 ) Plant compounds called phytoestrogens have been found to have similar structures and functions when compared to the hormones within humans. ( 1 ) Estradiol is an estrogen steroid hormone that naturally drops throughout a woman’s life cycle. Decreases in estradiol levels create vasomotor instability, which contributes to hot flashes. Utilizing plant compounds is theorized to help compensate for the estradiol drops through a woman’s life cycle. ( 1 ) Lower rates of postmenopausal symptoms have been observed in Asian women. This is thought to be due to the high dietary intake of soybeans, which contain isoflavones. Isoflavones are thought to work as a phytoestrogen and have a high binding affinity to estrogen beta receptors. ( 5 ) This sheds light on the mechanism behind how phytoestrogens are able to reduce hot flash frequency and vaginal dryness scores. ( 8 ) Based on the current research findings, the ingredients in the protocol below have demonstrated efficacy in improving hot flashes associated with menopause.
View protocolExercise Performance

4 more items in Exercise PerformanceMany dietary supplements have been popularly marketed to improve sports performance; however, only a few key ingredients have strong evidence to support these claims. Practitioners should be aware that based on an ingredient’s mechanism of action, a performance-enhancing effect may be observed for a certain type of exercise (e.g., aerobic), but these effects may not necessarily translate to another form (e.g., anaerobic). The ingredients included in this protocol may be beneficial for improved exercise performance and body composition outcomes. For example, beta-alanine helps to buffer acid buildup, helping to prevent fatigue. ( Ojeda 2020 ) Caffeine acts as a nervous system stimulant, reducing inhibition and ratings of perceived exertion. ( Doherty 2005 ) Creatine helps to provide additional short-duration energy reserves and muscle hydration. ( Kreider 2017 ) HMB may help to stimulate lipolysis, and in certain populations, may help to stimulate muscle protein synthesis. ( Kerksick 2018 ) Finally, whey protein may help consumers with satiety, ensure adequate protein intake, and help preserve lean muscle mass under energy restriction. ( Wirunsawanya 2018 )
