Reducing serum lead levels - safe for pediatric use. Two options are available. Modified citrus pectin (MCP) acts as a natural chelating agent that helps lower serum lead levels and increase urinary lead excretion without depleting essential minerals. [ 1 , 2 ] How It Works Binding Mechanism: MCP contains carboxyl-rich galacturonic acid units that bind to heavy metals like lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic in the bloodstream. [ 1 , 2 ] Renal Excretion: Once bound, the metal-pectin complex is filtered out and eliminated through the urine. [ 1 ] Mineral Preservation: Unlike conventional pharmaceutical chelation therapies, clinical data suggest MCP does not significantly deplete essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, or selenium. [ 1 , 2 ] Clinical Evidence Pediatric Study: A clinical trial evaluated oral MCP in hospitalized children (aged 5–12) with blood serum lead levels exceeding 20 µg/dL. [ 1 ] Dosage & Results: Patients given 15 g of MCP daily in three divided doses for up to 28 days experienced an average 161% decrease in blood serum lead levels and a 132% increase in 24-hour urinary lead excretion with no reported adverse side effects. [ 1 , 2 ] Typical Dosing & Usage Active / Loading Dose: Commonly cited protocols use 15 g per day (such as one 5 g scoop or equivalent capsules taken three times daily) mixed with water or juice on an empty stomach. [ 1 ] Maintenance Dose: Lower ongoing amounts (such as 5 g once daily) are sometimes used after initial heavy-metal clearing protocols. [1] Formulations: Widely studied commercial low-molecular-weight options include PectaSol Modified Citrus Pectin and related powder or capsule variants. [1] Side Effects: Generally well-tolerated, though mild gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating, gas, or loose stools can occur. [ 1 , 2 ]
