Initially trained as an acupuncturist and herbalist, I leapt headlong into the functional medicine world in 2018 after realizing how unhelpful, even harmful, most of today's conventional medicine approaches are. Where was the enlightened prevention? Where, the "systems" thinking? There had to be— and thankfully is— a better way. Over the ensuing years I have found that both "widening the lens" as well as looking at biomarkers that conventionally trained clinicians are not trained to think about (fatty acids, amino acids, vitamin & mineral levels, hormones and their metabolites, metals & molds) can be amazingly powerful and effective both in resolving the root causes of many health issues but also, and ideally, —in staving off them all! Even before these nutritional and other functional medicine tests became widely available (DTC) to the public, they had already helped me (thank you, IFM), my family members, and my patients in truly transformational ways that conventional clinicians (and even acupuncturists. herbalists) and today's "paint by number" medical system simply cannot.
