Wildfire Smoke Support

13 more items in Wildfire Smoke SupportSupporting Your Body During Wildfire Smoke Exposure Wildfire smoke contains tiny particles (PM2.5), gases, and other compounds that can temporarily increase oxidative stress and inflammation throughout the body. While the lungs are the most obvious target, smoke exposure may also affect the cardiovascular system, nervous system, immune system, and even the gut microbiome. Some people notice fatigue, headaches, brain fog, itchy eyes, congestion, coughing, reduced exercise tolerance, or worsening of existing conditions such as asthma, allergies, eczema, migraines, or histamine intolerance. The foundation of protection is always reducing exposure whenever possible. Staying indoors on poor air quality days, using a HEPA air purifier, replacing HVAC filters, wearing a well-fitted N95 respirator during prolonged outdoor exposure, and staying well hydrated can significantly reduce the burden on your body. Nutrition also plays an important role. Colorful fruits and vegetables naturally provide vitamin C, carotenoids, polyphenols, and other antioxidants that help support your body's own defense systems. During periods of increased environmental stress, some people may also benefit from targeted nutritional supplements to help maintain normal antioxidant function, support respiratory health, and promote healthy inflammatory balance. The supplements below are intended to support your body's normal physiologic responses during periods of wildfire smoke exposure. They are not intended to replace medical care, nor are they appropriate for every individual. Please review the disclaimer below and consult your healthcare provider if you have questions about which options are appropriate for you. Supplements 1. Vitamin C ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ One of my top recommendations. Why Vitamin C is a potent water-soluble antioxidant that helps neutralize reactive oxygen species generated during smoke exposure. It also plays a role in regenerating other antioxidants, supports immune function, and contributes to normal histamine metabolism. Because vitamin C is used during periods of oxidative stress, ensuring adequate intake may help support the body's natural defenses. Typical range: 500–2,000 mg/day (divided doses are often better tolerated). 2. N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Probably my second cornerstone. Why NAC serves as a precursor to glutathione, one of the body's primary endogenous antioxidants. It has also been studied for its ability to support respiratory health by helping maintain normal mucus consistency and supporting healthy antioxidant activity in the lungs. Typical range: 600–1,200 mg/day 3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Why Omega-3 fatty acids help support healthy inflammatory balance throughout the body and may be particularly helpful for cardiovascular and immune health during periods of increased environmental stress. 4. Quercetin ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Why Quercetin is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in foods such as onions, apples, and capers. It has antioxidant properties and has been studied for its ability to help stabilize mast cells and support a healthy inflammatory response. It may be particularly helpful for individuals who notice allergy or histamine-related symptoms during wildfire smoke exposure. 5. Magnesium Glycinate ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Why Stress, heat, and poor sleep often occur together during periods of wildfire smoke. Magnesium supports normal muscle function, nervous system regulation, and sleep quality, making it a valuable adjunct for overall resilience. 6. Electrolytes ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Why Heat increases fluid and electrolyte losses through sweat. Replacing sodium and other electrolytes can help maintain hydration and support normal muscle and nervous system function. 7. Curcumin ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ Why Curcumin has been extensively studied for supporting healthy inflammatory pathways and may be useful for some individuals experiencing increased inflammatory burden during periods of smoke exposure. 8. Probiotics ⭐⭐⭐☆☆ Why Emerging research suggests that air pollution may influence the gut microbiome. While research specific to wildfire smoke is still developing, maintaining a healthy gut microbiome is an important component of immune resilience. 9. Vitamin D (only if needed) Why Vitamin D supports normal immune regulation, but supplementation should ideally be guided by laboratory testing rather than used solely because of smoke exposure. 10. DAO Enzyme (selected individuals) Why This is not a general wildfire smoke supplement. DAO may be appropriate for individuals with known histamine intolerance who find that smoke and heat consistently worsen histamine-related symptoms despite dietary modification.
