Mast Cell Activation

Tests to help investigate allergic symptoms and possible mast cell activity.

  • MCAS Package

    This panel combines tryptase, plasma histamine, total immunoglobulin E (IgE), and a complete blood count (CBC) with differential to help investigate symptoms that may involve allergic reactions or mast cell activity, such as flushing, itching, or hives. Tryptase and histamine measure substances released by mast cells, while total IgE provides information about allergic immune responses. The CBC evaluates blood cells, including the different types of white blood cells. This panel alone cannot diagnose or rule out mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS). Total IgE and the CBC are not diagnostic tests for MCAS. Testing during symptoms may need comparison with baseline results.

  • Tryptase

    This test measures tryptase, an enzyme released mainly by mast cells—immune cells involved in allergic reactions. Tryptase testing can help evaluate a suspected severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) or investigate conditions involving increased mast cell activity or numbers, such as systemic mastocytosis. Timing matters: a sample collected soon after a reaction may be compared with a baseline sample taken after symptoms have resolved. An elevated result does not establish a diagnosis on its own, and a normal result does not rule out anaphylaxis or a mast cell disorder.

  • Histamine Determination

    This test measures histamine in your blood. Histamine is a chemical released by immune cells, including mast cells, that contributes to itching, flushing, hives, and other allergic symptoms. Testing may help investigate suspected histamine release during an allergic reaction or episodes of mast cell activation. Histamine breaks down quickly, so the timing of collection and special sample handling are important for accurate results. An elevated result does not identify the cause on its own, and a normal result does not rule out an allergic reaction or mast cell disorder. This test alone cannot diagnose systemic mastocytosis or histamine intolerance.

  • Immunoglobulin E

    This test measures the total amount of immunoglobulin E (IgE), an antibody involved in allergic responses and the body’s defense against certain parasites. Higher levels may occur with allergic conditions such as eczema, allergic asthma, or hay fever, as well as some parasitic infections and other conditions. Total IgE does not identify which substances you are allergic to or predict how severe an allergic reaction may be. An elevated result does not confirm an allergy, and a normal result does not rule one out.

  • CBC with Differential and Platelets

    The Complete Blood Count (CBC) with Differential measures the cells in your blood to help assess your overall health. It evaluates red blood cells, which carry oxygen; white blood cells, which help fight infection; and platelets, which help your blood clot. It also measures hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cell size. The differential breaks down the types of white blood cells, providing additional clues about immune activity. Testing can help investigate fatigue, weakness, fever, frequent infections, or unusual bruising and bleeding. Results may suggest anemia, infection, inflammation, or certain blood disorders, but additional testing is often needed to identify the cause.
